Rephotography by Mason Matthews, Anthony Burt

INSTRUCTIONS: Recreate a photograph that is at least a dozen years old as well as you can.

Stalingrad. Leningrad. Moscow. All famous battles fought by our Soviet allies in the second great war of the 20th century. Russian soldiers were their nations cannon fodder. As Joseph Stalin once said, "In the Soviet army it takes more courage to retreat than advance." Behind Russian infantry lay officers with machine guns who were more than willing to shoot at their brothers in arms if they were to fall back, even if the opposing forces greatly outnumbered them.

We have always been fascinated by this courage that the Russian infantry gave for their country to prevent their Fascist enemies from taking the "glorious Soviet Motherland."

I believe that our recreation of this picture of an unknown Russian officer leading his fellow soldiers, TT-32 officers pistol in hand, charging an enemy and knowing he will most likely not come back, displays this amazing feat of human bravery and sacrafice in the line of battle.
