Walking by Minches
March 9th, 2008 12:52 PMDay 1: March 2
9:42
Wanted to start earlier but my bed had other ideas.

10:38
Ocean! Cliffhouse. Sutro Baths. Meandering along the coastline.

Funniest thing I heard while walking up the coast towards Golden Gate: 3 kids are climbing up a hillside.
MOM: "that's far enough Miss Claire!"
KID: "But Mom, we're learning about nature!"
Kids crack me up, especially when they silence adults with their logic.
We. Have. Golden. Gate.

11:59
Seacliff
Holly bejesus these houses are HUGE! and look at all the street parking!!

By the time I hit the Presidio I felt the need to sit down and reflect a little on my walking adventure, this is what I wrote:
"Oooooh Adventure! This IS perfect. I spent the last 3 days celebrating a birthday (29 thankyouverymuch), drinking considerable amounts of liquor and being generally lazy with friends. Walking feels good!"
12:30
Two Thoughts
1) Have been so consumed with walking have not eaten. Should this be rectified? Possibly.
2) HILLS!!
12:54
Arrived at Golden Gate Bridge!
1:13
Lost in Presidio.
Found Pet Cemetery.

1:28
Crissy Field

1:47
Have been walking for 4 hours straight.
The parts that hurt: Everything that touches the ground, supports my spine, moves.
The parts that feel awesome: Everything that hurts.
2:14
Fairly sure I will be dead tomorrow. Totally worth it.

2:27
Sweet. Glorious. North Beach. So close to food. So close to rest.

2:50
Have Ryan. Have Burger Meister. Have desire to take well earned nap.

Post Walking Followup for Day 1March 3rd
Actually, I'm not too terribly sore. I can feel some muscles more than usual, but in a good way. I am also slightly more flexible today and overcome with the desire to stretch a lot and go for another walk. Sitting at my desk today is going to be a challenge.
Day 2: March 4
I crave walking in a way I did not expect. My muscles have started to get a little sore, so I have been stretching a lot at my desk - which I'm sure looks odd to passersby - my yoga pretzel contortions crammed inside my cube. I had an appointment with my Tax Guy today. I walked. It was short, but sweet.
I contemplated not including this walk in my tally. I already walk a considerable amount, it's my first choice over the bus unless it is really cold, raining, or dark outside and I am not sure about the neighborhood. In the end, since this is not a walk I do on a regular basis, I decided I would include it, but I rounded the mileage down to make up for the portion of the walk I consider a part of my everyday lunch walk from work.
I can already feel the effects of this task. Sitting at my desk all day is getting me itchy (see above comment on craving walking) and at the same time I have a lot more energy. My hope is that this task will stick with me long after the praxis and points. I am already thinking of ways to incorporate long walks into my weekends.
From Mission and New Montgomery to Market and Octavia.

Day 3: March 5
Decided to walk home from work today. I work in the Financial District. I live in the Inner Richmond. It's 4 miles. I decided to do this when I woke up this morning, and it turned out to be a really good idea. I had a rather unpleasant end to my day and the walk helped me get out of my mediocre mood and back into a more peaceful one.
5:10 left work
6:44 got home

Day 4: March 6
I was given a bike today by a friend. I was planning to ride home... even though it was pointed out to my by multiple people that my first bike ride since, oh let's say... 1987.... shouldn't be in the financial district at rush hour.
Unfortunately for my knees, I am stubborn. Pretty much the second you say "You can't/shouldn't do that." I say "Watch me!"
And that's exactly what you could have done -- watched me crash my bike into a parked car and flip myself face first onto Mission with the first 5 minutes of my "ride" home.
People laughed. The biker behind me looked at me with a pissed expression that clearly said "f*cking newbie!"
I picked myself up. Convinced the woman on the side of the street that I was indeed OK and fully intact, and then walked my bike and my bruised knees home.

Tally another 4 miles towards praxis.

Day 5: March 9
I am kitty sitting for friends in my neighborhood.

They live a little over a mile from me, I made the trip a handful of times over the weekend, I'm tallying 3 miles (a modest tally, as I've walked it before - and frankly, since the 12 mile walk, everything else seems so small).

.......your task completion has spurred new ideas for tasks....thank you
and a cute cat to boot. Vote!
And Magpie- I'd bet any money you can do it all in one day.
Yeah, I could if it was a 3 day weekend. Ah, I believe that there is on coming up soon.
Magpie, breaking it up really helped. though after the first day, everything under 12 miles felt insignificant. The 12 mile day was the best!
Kyle, so glad I could assist in task ideas. I'm interested to see what you've been spurred to create...
This inspired me to walk to work this morning ;^})
the walking should help dislodge that bacon wrapped hot dog...
Yay for walking! and Hills UP WITH HILLS!
Have you tried walking up the Filbert Steps yet (heading up to Coit Tower)? Beautiful walk with a lovely garden, right in the middle of the steps, plus at the top is the apartment building they used in Dark Passage with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall... one of my favorite walks.
JTony, my old friend lives right by Coit Tower. I have walked all the stairs and hills in his neighborhood... those hills always kick my ass.
The Hills are Alive! Up With Hills!

Now you too can document healing. The Fool has embarked on this task today, but doing the whole thing in one day. I really wanted to join him, but wasn't sure I could do it. Maybe I'll take your tack and split it up.
