I could have spent more time on it and put more detail on it but I fell in love with its simplicity.

Rivalry is more personal. Say, two friends competing against each other to be better at guitar, say.
Competition is more impersonal. Poker, for example. It's unlikely you know all of your opponents, but it's still competition.
At least, that's how I view it.
