Dérive by Tricia Tanaka

March 22nd, 2008 9:28 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Among the various situationist methods is the dérive [literally: 'drifting'], a technique of transient passage through varied ambiances. In a dérive one or more persons during a certain period drop their usual motives for movement and action, their relations, their work and leisure activities, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there.

One can dérive alone, but all indications are that the most fruitful numerical arrangement consists of several small groups of two or three people who have reached the same awakening of consciousness, since the cross-checking of these different groups' impressions makes it possible to arrive at objective conclusions.

Undertake a dérive, and report your objective conclusions to your fellow players.

Graveyard Dérive

In which I wander around a graveyard seemingly at random, heading in the direction of whichever gravestone or marking caught my eye.
Not just graves, but plant life as well. Particularly the giant cypresses and flowers.
A (nearly) complete guide to a little cemetery that people don't often visit.

Thank you for picking out all the little details on the gravestones - that's always the best, and sometimes most heartbreaking, part of a graveyard.

The intricate carvings, property line, and "mailbox" are my favorites.

Given that the task suggests a journey, it would've been cool to see more of a narrative of what attracted you where, or some other map of your wanderings. (Maybe I'm just too obsessed with this sort of thing.)

You found Cthulhu's grave. Go figure.

A little shy of a full scale instance of the Dérive, perhaps, but I'm a sucker for exploring graveyards.

Given the huge amount of visual information packed into a graveyard, and the hours I've spent even in small graveyards, just wandering from pocket to pocket, I believe it magnifies the scale appropriately. Nicely done.

"At its minimum it can be limited to a small self-contained ambience: a single neighborhood or even a single block of houses if it’s interesting enough (the extreme case being a static-dérive of an entire day within the Saint-Lazare train station)."
