No one new, yet.
I tested it on a friend. :)
There have been a couple of times I've taken vows of silence for short periods of time. Something very freeing about it, actually. Will you actually be taking a vow of silence for a period, or is it just an icebreaker?
Oh, and you have the same paint I do, sitting on your desk.
I know all about vows of silence. I want to see some evidence of your vow other than that sign. How did it affect those around you? How did it affect you?
I chose to go mute on occasion, normally when I am camping because I feel it adds to the experience. I usually get yelled at by people because they want me to talk. I just shrug a lot. It works.
I took the vow of silence today and used the sign.
I think my friends thought I was shunning them, they didn't understand why I would take a vow of silence.
And I had problems when ordering food.
I just had to point and nod and smile, but I couldn't say "thank you", which made me feel very rude.
It was a nice change, though.
A couple of times people were talking, and I wanted to join in because I knew the answer to what they were asking about, but I restrained myself.
I didn't feel very quiet, though, because I had a cold and had to cough all the time. And my thoughts were as loud as ever.
I think I smiled a lot more. And I started using a sort of improvisational sign-language.
My sister translated a lot of what she thought I needed to say. She was surprisingly accurate. Now I know even more how much sisters think alike.
P.S. Reeves paint rocks!
I used to participate in a National Day of Silence (it's a GLBT awareness program that tends to be run at colleges and high schools), and it was a bit of a transforming experience. I don't know the terms of any particular vow of silence, but we all tended to use white boards or small sheets of paper for ordering food and communication. I had a prepared "Thank you" sheet of paper in my back pocket so I could whip it out whenever I needed to.
Also, siblings are awesome at translation. That's a neat discovery.
I've never felt like I could take the time for a vow of silence, but I'm glad you gave it a try! Very nice.

who did you introduce yourself to?
