Message to the Past by Tricia Tanaka

January 21st, 2008 8:59 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Deliver a message to the past. Make sure it arrives.

I knew this task would be tricky, so I used all my knowledge of passing messages back and forth in time and did what I could.

First I meditated with a pencil and paper in front of me.
My theory was that in the future, I would sit in the same spot and think about the clues, so my subconscious would pick up on this.

When my mind was clear, I picked up the pencil and began to draw in random lines, not thinking about what I was drawing.
When I felt I'd drawn enough I opened my eyes and looked at what I'd drawn.
It was a mess of lines, but two things stood out at me: The number 8 and a antelope-like creature.
Now what could that mean?

The 8 could be attributed to the fact that I just watched a lot of LOST episodes, which feature the numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42.
And as for the antelope, I made a picture of a mountain goat that looked similar a few days ago.
Could I find more clues following those leads?

First I started with the number 8.
I looked up 8.com, but there was no such website.
However, on the "Page not found" site, was an advertisement for 2008!
The new year is 08!
I looked up 2008.com and it pulled up the site for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The first thing that popped out at me was the phrase "City on the Move".
I google-imaged that and found a picture that said "Free speech now".
A message?

Then for the second part: Horned ungulate.
I looked on my desk for the mountain goat picture, and found it was facing left, pointing to the closet.
In the closet I found a piece of paper with letter-stickers on it. The letters eiluoy were missing.
This was a shocker. A strange occurrence that actually appeared to mean something.
Eiluoy spelled backwards is "youlie". You lie.
I looked up "you lie" (I know I look up a lot of things, but it's a great way to find random clues.)
The first match was a lyrics page for the song You Lie.
The part that struck me was this:

How long until you just can't go on
And the urge to break loose is just too strong
You should let go that's what you want to do
Oh but you don't know, you don't know
If it's the right thing to do

That's how I used to feel. You want to be different, but is it worth it?
Then I found SF0. More people doing strange stuff.
Having fun.
Do I still feel that way?
I guess I kind of do. And always will, perhaps.
It's hard battling peer pressure.
Standing out amongst the crowd can be kind of daunting.

So here are the two "messages":

"Free speech now", and the above.
I think the meaning is this:

My future self is telling me that I know it's hard, but I need to let go.
"It's the right thing to do", and I know it is, because that's what makes me happy.
It's the right to free speech and free movement.
Why wast that right?

Now, there is no evidence that any of this message-from-the-future stuff is real, and I don't really believe it is, but that doesn't mean I didn't get a message.

Part Two: Eight Months Later

I am sending a message to the past today. It comes in two parts.
The first is the number eight. The number eight has a lot to do with this task. The number eight was to tell me that I would send the message eight months in the future. It also helped make the connection by me meditating at 8:00. And the year being 2008.

My self has a habit of falling for red herrings and getting carried away with "clues", which I did not account for. Hence the "Eight means free speech".
However, I must say it's a pretty good message regardless.

The plot thickens...
Okay, prepare to be confused.
Although I sent the number eight first, it was just like an address. The only reason I'm sending a message at all is because I was instructed to. By my self. In the future.

Last night I got a message in a dream.
So my even-more-in-the-future self is sending messages.
The message read this: "In the land where everyone sings, Carus is dead."
I don't know what it means, but the message also continued "This is the news/of you to deliver/the past that will see." In a poem-like fashion. I assumed that it was saying I must deliver this to the past. So I did.
I meditated and concentrated hard, imagining the thought shooting back through time.
Since thoughts don't have mass, it should be pretty easy, right?

Well, my past self seemed only to pick up the number eight, and some weird message about 'you lie'.
I didn't send any message about lying. Or feeling good about yourself (Although that is a nice message)
Maybe my even-more-future-self sent that one.

Anyhow, I decided to look through my January 2008 journal, and guess what I found! I don't even remember writing this, but on January 22, a day after my past self posted this praxis, in brown ink (standing apart from normal pencil) are the words "In the land where everyone sings, Carus is dead."!
So my past self did get the message! Unfortunately, she didn't recognize it as such.

And I still don't get what it means.
Carus is dead? Land where people sing? Is it a warning or something?
Thanks a lot, future self. You win at confusing past selves.

But wait! I just thought of something else! What if the message wasn't sent by a future me at all? What if it was sent by someone else?
Oh well, we'll have to see.

To be continued when
1. I figure out what the message means
or
2. I send the message (You lie or Carus)
or
3. Find out if someone else sent the message.

Tell us when you do get around to transmitting the message so we know how far in time it traveled.

Okidoki.
I'm guessing I'll send it somewhere in 2-3 years from now.
