![]() download file You can see in this image, the individual, unlike most other mammals, is not covered in a thick fur. The vellus hair, a soft, downy-like substance occurs instead. As males of the species grow older, they tend to grow in more coarse hair, but females like this will often go without this additional coarse hair. This can be explained via sexual selection, or less commonly, theories about adapting to savanna conditions or the "aquatic ape". The loss of hair over time, as well as other conditions in which an adult form begins to resemble the immature form more readily is referred to as neoteny. Also here we can see the intake of fruits, something shared with their closest ape relatives. |
