I got a sense that while they had no problem with camping out on the beach, they didn't want to do it just anywhere, they wanted the comfort of some kind of item near them like a volleyball net pole. I suppose the vast openness was a bit too much for them out there. They needed something more tangible than a million grains of sand near them when they woke, to remind them where they are and who they are.
