I put Flash Harry's recording on my iPhone and headed down to the beach where I found a little cave in the rocks to hide from the sound of the surf a little, and then hit record and I clicked rocks together every time there was a click in the original recording. At the point where it gets louder (for whatever reason) I climbed out of the cave and gave a good "view" of the surf. I turned the sounds of a boring night in the UK with all artificial sounds into an all natural California surf experience.
