I started by running around the city looking for fruit trees. I'd seen several crab apple trees, and at least one pear tree earlier this summer. But all of them were fruitless by the time I looked again. I also looked up this group that has started planting urban orchards for public harvest, and checked out one of the "urban wilds" where they've sited a couple fruit trees. But again, it was too late in the year. Luckily, I noticed an apple in the middle of the road, which led me to a very nice apple tree still loaded with fruit.
