Journey to the End of the Year: Berlin 2009 by Arthur Schiwon

January 1st, 2010 5:35 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: MEET at Alexanderplatz at 19:00 on 31.DEZEMBER.2009

Try to reach a series of checkpoints as STEALTHILY as possible while avoiding being caught by chasers. Should you be captured, you become a chaser yourself, now PURSUING your former friends and allies.

The city spreads out before you. Rushing from point to point, lit by the slow strobe of fluorescent buses and dark streets. Stumbling into situations for a stranger's signature. Fleeing unknown pursuers, breathing hard, admiring the landscape and the multitude of worlds hidden in it.

For one night, drop your relations, your work and leisure activities, and all your usual motives for movement and action, and let yourself be drawn by the attractions of the chase and the encounters you find there. No bikes, no cars, just feet and public transportation.

Describe your experience.

While 26C3 i got this flyer and decided to try out this game. I started alone and went to the first checkpoint by foot via Französische Straße, after i escaped a chaser just some minutes after the start. Well, he did not see me, i guess :)

Next time I had to rescue me from the chasers was at U-Bahn station Oranienburger Tor. Two chasers left the train behind me, so i hurried to the exit. At the street corner was another chaser, but i made passing him by simple running.

On my way from Tacheles to Volkspark i saw two guys before me, behaving very strange. They hid behind cars, then ran a bit, hid again, ran again, nd taking a strange route. Eventually i overtook them, until we joined together just few 50m before the park. Our new alliance did not last long, because we had to split on Fehrbelliner Str. on our way to Cafe Chagall, where two really fast chasers tried to get us. I escaped just about into a side street by zig-zagging and a bit luck. The chaser was only one or two meters behind me and i was running out of steam :)

In Cafe Chagall I met this girl named Jojo, who lost her friends to chasers, so we went on together. We got away from the besieged safe zone around Cafe Chagall and get to Wasserturm quite easily. On the way to the final destination, we met a lot of other people, formed a bigger group and took a tram to Alexanderplatz. By a suboptimal idea we wanted to march on between Park Inn and Galeria Kaufhof, where a horde of chasers awaited us, unfortunately. While trying to break out the chain they spun on i got caught – damn slippery ground. This was where i lost Jojo. Pity, it was fun to go with her.

So, as a chaser now i went with the other chasers towards c-base, but did not find somebody to chase and entered the club sometime after 10pm.

To conclude, I enjoyed this game very very much, i did not expect to find so much fun there! Many thanks to the organizers, agents and the loads of players, who made this a great evening and new year party.

Hi! I was in the group that joined you at the tram. It was real fun. Just a pity that so many were caught on Alexanderplatz.

Hey! Maybe we were more lucky, if we circumvent the passage. Well, it was fun anyway and I am glad you made it.
