I'm not an expert, but I don't think the task requires that the clues actually lead to anything real or concrete. It just says leave clues. I don't think they actually have to be clues TO anything. Dr. Subtle may have a clear message to send out, but he may not as well. Either way, if he explains the mystery I'm afraid something in the task may be lost.

All I get is the Fight Club reference, and maybe the first clue is about the boardwalk.

well...

below the streets, the beach

is a slogan from mai '68 which some of you might better recognize in french:

sous les pavés, la plage

it was used quite a bit during our own revolution against u of a during glasnost, and refers to the liberty (of what's good and natural?) that can be found beneath the cobblestones if only we lift them and, presumably, use them to bring down our oppressors.
