Great job guys. I look forward to the next installment (and would be happy to chat with y'all sometime)!

No reason that you can't still make a podcast. Im glad you liked ours though, think of this first episode as a Beta and next week it should be more polished.

Yes, Tom. Please put me on your list. It will have to be in a couple of weeks, however, as I need to get my Mac fixed before the power cord will be stable enough for the think to work reliably (half the time I'm typing one handed because I actually have to hold the power cord in a particular position for the machine to get power at all... right now I have it taped in place...).

So sign me up for a couple of weeks, or so.

so JTony, and GY0 innovators: what about a podcast vs. the podcast? hm? room for others? nothing official? that sort of thing?

don't get me wrong, it's a welcome idea whose time has come - just there's no reason JTony couldn't do his own, right? you're not just going to shut down your own production JT, yeah? Perhaps some kind of collaboration?

if only there was some kind of tool, or a group of tools held together in a sort of web or net-work that promoted international collaboration... oh. wait.

dude, karl marx is buried in London. he lived there for years.... i'll bet he was out tasking and praxisizing on those beaches at some point.

actually now that i look back he talks about suffolk in kapital, not sure if he mentions norfolk...

Thanks for votes and ideas re: another podcast. I agree there can be more than one (This aint Highlander), and encourage anyone to do another SF0 podcast if they like.

I will most likely be doing some sort of podcast, but for another task, and on another subject. A vidcast is appealing, but I sure don't want to add video editing back into my repertoir at this time... too many other things.

My original idea for a podcast was actually going to use SF0's built in phone-in audio feature... and I will still use that for something. Quality pretty much sucks, especially on a cell phone, but the idea of "phoning it in" still really appeals to me. Y'all will see when I've done something (which I have to wait to see how my computer turns out before I can even start, at this point).

well blimey, if it 'adn't'a been fer them wehrkin class cockneys and the, ahem, english blueblood fat cats (those damnable capitalists - don't go taking personal or national offense, now...) there practically wouldn't be a kapital! mr. marx got run out of europe not long after those crazy 1848 revolution times (great gramma of a more recent one) and settled out in soho. that's right, there's even a fancy restaurant there now down below his building. rumour has it his friends and neighbours [sic] paid rentage to a suffolk lord or lady or earl or dame or one of those types... bet they couldn't afford rent there now!

anyway, he did reside in london for quite some time, if i remember correctly it was right up until the paris commune. people take spring break pictures where he wrote the book, can't remember if it's st. paul's or the library, or what. but those types of photos are all over the place, people take 'em when they're students and then frame them for paperweights when they get their professorships in the social sciences. don't forget that he was there right in the damn midst of the best and worst of times... he must have seen it all!

as for suffolk, my googlebooks tells me that he refers to it in a few chapters of V.1 of that tome... most notably when he's going over agricultural production. he does the whole, "shit comes to the city from the countryside then gets eaten up and washed out the thames" shtick for awhile... actually pretty prescient when you look at envi.sci. textbooks, these days they still harp on a lot of the same basic rhetoric. but you haven't read it yet! or have you? i wouldn't recommend it, at least not in large dosages. he gets fairly ridiculous a little too often for my taste, but peppers his work with such strong language it's no wonder people of the western world cower at his name.

but yeah, london. marx is still there.

(no subject)
posted by Adam on February 27th, 2008 5:04 PM

Thanks for that. Better than if Id have asked my politics tutor.

I do have the Selected Writings of Marx hanging around somewhere. I must get round to them at some point, I get the gist of his work from studying politics but next year we get to look at it in much greater detail.

So ... so yeah, if we got to 1:30 we could do two :45s.

Hey, I'd do it again though. Any time, that was fun. Sorry I talk so much; there's probably some cut-able stuff.

Mailbag. Podtask. Etc.
posted by Burn Unit on March 9th, 2008 1:27 AM

Oh I meant to say, I did like the edit, Ben. Though I might have played it out a little differently (this is not a slight). The clip I sent was too long by half, yes. Though in the build and release, it was set up as a kind of intentional Crystal Method or Josh Wink sort of riff, which you can hear in its entirety here. So to get that I might have just started in the middle and then faded it out a few bars after the "mailbag!"

For the podtask, I get it now why you kept saying none of us did it: static cuts me out when I say "Boston," which was the fifth city I listed my first time thru--and you can hardly understand me saying it when I repeat the list! It's there. Nyah. :-p

I love how I keep trying to pawn Eleanor off with the cartoons. Great parenting, that. Kid can't take a hint though.

I have yet to listen to it but Im not debating whether BU had alot of interesting stuff to say as I know everyone on this site has interesting stuff to say. Im just saying 1hr20 is alot of my time. I do like the idea of having two 45 minute sections though.

Good idea.

Not only did was I willing to listen to a 1:20 minute podcast, I listened to it twice. So there you go.

Another excellent podcast. I really liked the outro music - any chance of getting putting that up?

Tonights cast also bought up interesting ideas. It will solve connection issues and result in 50% more content!

Adam'll probably announce something later, but to tease you, here's a snippet of Skype.

I listen to a lot of podcasts, and I don't really have a problem with longer ones. I mean, the assumption is that you have an iPod and can move about, listening as you walk or ride the bus or shop or whatever. You're not tied down. So why be tied down by time?

The main reasons for time constraints on radio and television is that they were live, stationary media and there had to be a way to arrange advertising for optimal audience saturation. You had to physically BE at the radio which pushed out the edia at only a specific time, and if you missed it, you were hosed, it was gone. You had to be able to time the events effectively, so having them on the hour or half hour made sense. Once there, you paid your admission by listening to the ads or sponsorship which happened near those same time markers.

Podcasting is on when you want it, off when you don't, and you can easily pick pu where you left off. Why balk at casts that are more than an hour. Do you really value your bus transit time so much you can't devote it to part of your favorite 2 hour podcast, especially when it contains people you actually know?

This audio keeps desynching, it's more noticeable toward the end. Sorry listeners, I seem to interrupt everyone because I talk before them.

And we're working on getting even more podcasty goodness direct to the listeners.

How was the coma?

Podcast #4 is here

Get it here.

Complete with screwed up everything as per the normal!

This week:
# Lincoln guest hosts
# The desynching issues get worse
# Tom gets dropped mid-cast
# Apathy

Tune in next week for some cunning ideas that should improve quality.

(no subject)
posted by GeneShark Tom on March 16th, 2008 9:37 AM

To fill you all in, as of next week things should get better.

Main cast: Saturday release, Ben+Tom+Guest. Same as has been, but better quality.

PodLite: Wednesday release, Adam+Previous Guest (I believe Anna One is first, then if possible we'll go through previous guests to keep 2 guests behind the main one) This'll be short, and will be focused a lot on the interview.

Daryl will hopefully be recording something for one of them, undecided yet.

Yes, less connections = better quality = more win.
Plus more content for you!

Excuse me whilst I noob up this conversation...

Every week, you go through new tasks, retired tasks, and pre-tired tasks...

How do you get to this pre-tired list? It seems to be not anywhere...

(no subject)
posted by Burn Unit on March 19th, 2008 10:56 AM

who said anything about pretired tasks? who told you to ask that question?
the old skool way is to use the taskDetail url, going to a task by number. The taskDetail url string is sf0.org/taskDetail/?id= . Thus: http://sf0.org/taskDetail/?id=1284 . Change that 4 digit number and you find pretired tasks. we're up over 3000 now. There's another way, to be revealed to you In Time, but "Should I divulge any of what I have seen - whether intentionally or unintentionally, directly or through oblique stratagem - my punishment will be swift in coming and indolent in its completion. I shall not suffer alone." This text will expire.
Who do you work for? who do you work for?!

When this task is linked to from

sf0.org/dragonscales/Make-It-Work - the first two links are fine.

But when linked from sf0.org/inYarmouth or sf0.org/frozenhaddock - they change to those usernames.

How odd.

Get it here.

This week:
# JTony Guest hosts

# Discussion of the SFØ audio proof line

Next weeks guest should be lowteck, however we can't guarantee it.

posted by Burn Unit on March 24th, 2008 2:50 PM

It's funny, but I debate internally if all the "shit we lost the connection again" should be used as evidence that you're not making it work and therefore I (who have already voted) must flag; or--and I tend to lean in the direction of this--if, by putting this out every week in spite of the disconnects, you're doing the very essence of making it work.

(no subject)
posted by GYØ Ben on March 24th, 2008 2:55 PM

I debate internally if that is funny or not.

Surely Making It Work is finding the connection after losing it.

Making It Work is being able to conduct a podcast without my help (regardless of whether I edited it together or not).

Making It Work is being able to hold an idea with very little source material for longer than two weeks.

But truly and honestly, the listeners are the ones that truly Make It Work.

(no subject)
posted by GeneShark Tom on March 24th, 2008 2:55 PM

I think that those are the breakages, and we get round them to make it work. If something isn't broken, it can't be fixed, right?

And if I reference Ben's original reason behind this being a Make it Work completion, we, GYØ, it, are working.

We made work for ourselves, therefore making ourselves work.

If we go ahead with an idea we had (not sure if it was in the final edit) you'll be hearing all the screw ups in the next podcast...

(no subject)
posted by JTony Loves Brains on March 24th, 2008 4:47 PM

BU If it was easy, the task would be called "Making it Easy." It is not easy, but continually requires "Work"... hence, "Making it Work".

You're confusing two totally different tasks.
