Urban Altar II: Theurgy
It's Not Paranoia Unless It's Real
Tehching Hsieh(three of five)
Long ago a mysterious civilization erected Henges all over the world. Their motivation is the subject of scholarlydebate, and will ultimately never be known for sure.
Every so often one of these Henges reappears for a short time, and then disappears on the next solstice. The scientific mechanism behind this is another mystery, though most people have stopped trying to figure it out and accept that it is probably "some sort of magic."
So please take a moment to look around this monument. The people who made it are surely long gone, and any religious significance has long been forgotten. But it's still quite pretty to look at, isn't it?
This is a task that has been decades in the making.
It is so large that not even an assembly of front page players could do it on their own and so we turned to the public and gave them many easels made of doors and said…"If you paint it, Door Henge will come"

We all got together bright and early and met at the Lowteck Lair to start loading the doors.

Once we got the doors laid out at the work sight Avidd was the man with the plan…

Previous failed attempts to assemble even a single set of doors at the sight had taught us to do all the prep work we could before arriving. Avidd and a few others had found out which doors made good sets and numbered the doors accordingly.
We literally put our blood into making Doorhenge…
How we assembled the doors…
Timelapse of the creation of Doorhenge…
A Victory Bow…

You will never guess who rode up mid chorus line. Watch how we deal with the cop, a handful of cool smoothness with one uniform story to help smooth the whole situation over.*CLASSIC*
Um… It was like this when we got here?
(About 2/3 of the way through the above, Lank starts "checking a message" on his phone, taking sneaky photos of po-po!)
Cast of Characters…
The Doors…

Yellowbear: had a great great time! Thanks so much for all this fun, and all the hard planning put in by avidd, and the extra work by Lowteck. And the stellar documentation job led by Spar & Anna1!I couldn't have ever imagined that this would go so smoothly. On the very first door assembly test run we had the batteries die on two different drills, p00n got so discouraged he went on a rampage with the sledge hammer. I really didn't know what to expect on the day of. After grabbing a quick cup of coffee I rolled up to the lowteck lair at 8am on the spot. A full contingient of friendly faces had assembled and loaded all the doors by 9. They were out of the van stacked in the park by 10 and they just seemed to fly up without a hitch.
I really can't believe that we were lucky enough to catch the encounter with the police on video. We had been using the time lapse on the tripod, then decided that we wanted to have some bowing at the end and switched to video. As you can see right as we were dancing in rides the fuzz. Brilliant!Zemaluco, un urso tambien: Really this was one of the most remarkable projects I've seen with regard to collaboration.... there were so many pieces and parts and contributions (some relatively anonymous) that I'm sure will only multiply in the future. Luckily all of us have been bitten by the sf0 bug and we have the fever.....

one small thing that we didn't go into too much detail about was the decision on the site. there are strange patterns in the ground surrounding the fire-ring, which are replicated in the arrangements of eucalyptus trees on the border of the grove/gardens. luckily there are a lot of stop motion photos and videos, but nothing taken from the air so that you can see these very well. before constructing the henge, we took some shovels to these patterns to see if anything had been buried, but it is difficult to dig in what is mostly sand, and it just made us wonder further about the existence of former patterns in this location.
there must be evidence somewhere of whomever constructed the original henges, but with all the eucalyptus leaves, it is difficult to keep track of what is under the ground, so we only see what is above....
Pirate Eddy : For me, this was such a surreal experience. Jet lagged and worn out, I arrived to help with the door instalation after flying back from England. Less the a week before, I had been standing at the real stone henge and (i know this will sound dorky but..) was all the more excited to install our very own door henge. During the public easel piece, that day was so amazing. There was such a high energy level with the whole group and we knew that this would be awesome. The day of the door instalation was also an amazing day (despite me falling asleep whenever I had the chance) and there was much tequila and chanting to be had!! What I love even more is the fact that it's become a sort of sanctuary for us. We join together for epic bon fires and enjoy the night air surrounded by our doors. It's nice to know that I've yet again found a group of talented and fun individuals who are always willing to take it to the next level for art!
Rainbowbright: I can honestly say that this was one of the most epic endeavors that I have had the privledge to be a part of and I'm grateful for the invite. I believe that the photos do most of the talking, so I will not add too many unnecessary words. Between painting, test runs, High Five Cities, talking to policemen on horseback, and processing/chanting around a fire in full on druid garb (at 11pm in the park might I add)...I couldn't have asked for anything better. More photos By Rainbowbright
Lank move doors good.
Lank paint doors, too.
Like to pound rebar into dirt! Smash smash smash! Doorhenge gooood.

anna one: likes collaborating with mr. bigglesworth! And also especially with the puurty peoples what makes for hengetastic photos with my camera! Also, anna likes painting with beer. Sometimes, not so much with the lame taggers what ruin the paintings and friendly po-po on horses. Also, so much bleeding? Why the bleeding? Do we get extra points for bleeding? So much blood spillage.

Lowteck: I had 30-something doors that I was gonna throw out, but i noticed this task and inspiration hit. We made a truly awesome piece of public art. It was a completely impulsive idea, but i'm glad i went through with it. Many awesome and talented players came together and worked hard to make this happen. My favorite part (aside from doorhenge itself) was when the police encounter started. We weren't being too smooth
POLICE:What are you guys doing?
ME: We're dancing!
LANK: Where's Emily? *there was no emily
SOMEONE ELSE: Where's [some imaginary guy's name]?
BLUEBERRYMASCARPONE: It was like this when we got here.
P00n for the Stone:

I worked on the initial brainstorming for the design and implementation of the object, did the shopping for the hardware for the test and smashed a rock with a sledge hammer. I painted three doors "What is Behind this Door?" the Low-tech silhouette door and the glasnost SF0 city silhouette door. Unfortunately the construction happened post move to the desert so that is where my contribution ended.
Avidd: I took the engineering role and figured out how to get the doors standing upright at minimal cost. I went with lowteck to buy a bunch of bolts and brackets and rebar, then we used fun fun power tools to cut them to size. I was really proud of how they turned out, especially the time lapse photos. After they were erect I spread it around to some friends and door henge was mentioned in a couple large blogs.
S P A R : I threw in a helping hand when needed but mostly I just stuck to documenting every single second of epic tasking. Mainly I would just like to thank everyone who put time and energy into making this thing happen. Avidd I don't think this would have worked out without your engineering. Lowtech, your the man. What will you do with all that space? *please say tasking, please say tasking*
And now for something completely different…

Woohoo…
I have to say it felt like a bomb dropping when this one hit the PRAXIS
Damn, that's busy. Busy hot. Whatever the hell that means....
Awesome job guys!
Awesome work.
Great idea, beautiful construction, and masterful handling of the cop. I love it!
Struggling to find time to get over to the park to see it in person.
so uh... how long is this gonna stay on the high score? hehe... wonderful job guys :)
The videos (especially that first one) are amazing! Wow!
Also, the fact that several amazing sf0 players did this, but then also expanded it to the public, really strikes me. The notion that sf0 can be the center of creating enormously great things, by giving enough motive force to make them happen and making it possible for others to join as well. It's an amazing prospect, to think of sf0 as a force for making such things happen. A breeding ground for community-driven Improv Everywhere type events. It's a beautiful vision.
That's brilliant! The videos are awesome. The guest appearance by the park ranger is a crowning touch.
lowteck, you beat us to the punch in the praxis. Message to minneapolis door-project participants: blame my fertility!
but we will honor your awesomeness with a positive turn of our own, I promise. on notice!
*edit: "if you do come back and get it that's good. if you don't come back and get it, that's bad. Oh Em Gee, I am laughing my ASS off!
"it was like this when we got here." seriously hilarious.
Now that i have a chance to see the last video, I can see the exact moment as i am dancing that lowteck turns to me and says "here come the cops." I say "yeah right" and then he replies "No, for real". *Gulp* Hilarious!
Wow. I went to see it and it is even more impressive in person than online. The doors are beautiful and the installation is unbelievably well-executed. They even have the logos for the groups on them! I found all but BARTPA.

Basically, going to Doorhenge made the week. I even looked at the tops of all the Doorhenges (riding on Yoshi's shoulders). This picture is of an evil cat on top of one.

The ranger riding on a horse is a really nice coda to your installation. Oh, also, I want to say that the documentation is SO GREAT! The time lapse is my favorite.
And the druid ceremony looks so fun!
Aaaaah! I am freaking out!
It's too bad "run in with the law" was retired

What ever happened to that BartPA stencil? Hmm? HMMM??!?
the bartpa stencil is in my messenger bag AS WE SPEAK!
lowteck has paint.... it took a bit of coordination but i will do it..... later today.
gee whiz do i hate having a life that schedules me free time into small bits and pieces!
Anna Bear your expression is perfect for that comment
This nation of Door Henge was visited by High-Five City? I would believe that.
HIGH FIVE CITY!
I believe that I may have been a part two...yes two High Five Cities that day!
I love you guys! I just wanted to tell you....
This is what it's all about.
All of it.
I don't want to blow any minds, but there were in fact 3 High-Five Cities that i saw, and I was away from the site for a little while, another might have slipped in
yes, I think the total was three high-five cities...
On top of that…
We just collected the Moderator Trinity vote from SSI.
And lets not forget Orion is in there too!
This is beautiful. Good job everyone! This is definitely the most awesome completion I have seen (in my few short months) at SF0.
Doorhenge should be re-instated annually with a big ceremony and lots of alcoh-...lots of fun things. Glorious!
..........but where be Eleanor??
i would give some exclamation points here but the shift key on my friend's computer does not work so no capitalization here either. but yay and pats on everyone's backs.
The under-represented BartPA logos are in full force as of Friday!

Hurrah for BartPA!
I'm sorry I didn't make the bonfire last night, but I got out there on Friday. Absolutely amazing!
Two more votes and this one will be tied for all time most votes
… ahh… 1 more
Very, very well deserved. Long Live Biome Gardens!
Oh man that is like two pages worth of votes… I kieep scrolling and they keep going.
I feel like the Secret Word Browser Plugin should go of now!
Ahh the hay day of equivelance! Hegh HA!!!
Yeah Yeah YEah? Shesh Lowtech. This would be your Second high vote task and your numero uno on the all time players list. no enthusiasm?
OH OH Bonus yet again! More of my co-workers have found door hendge on their own and were telling me about it last night at work...Which I thought was pretty awesome
i went to check up on it today.
There were three people in the middle of doorhenge. I talked to them for a few minutes. They really liked it and were planning on coming back with mushrooms.
Randomly, my favorite local poet (whom I might add, I've only ever met once at a reading for his last book) was reading my blog (!!!) and wanted to let us know that 'doorhenge' rhymes with 'orange'.
I feel faint.
He just got himself a new fan! i searched for him and found that his new book is called "Whiskey & Robots" That's my kind of poetry!! I am stoked that he liked the henge. And's he's right about the rhyming.
I tried to invite him to come to the bonfire, but he's got a reading that night. I'm going to keep pestering him until he joins us.

check out this site.
Finally saw it and truly, photos don't do it justice. Nor do they do it oranges.
Tonight's Urban Altar reconnaissance mission has turned up a terrible atrocity:

Firstly, I'm hoping for news of safe passage for one ਬਿਨ ਯਾਮੀਨ, who was calling our little henge home. Secondly, I invite all the fans of the doorhenge project to assist me in doing some clean-up and possible re-building tomorrow, Tuesday September 4th at 6pm. I will bring the necessary tools for re-construction and safe demolition of un-rebuildable trilithons (two standing doors and the lintel on top).
And now, a moment of silence, in honor of our brave fallen doors.
Perhaps the spirit of the city was displeased with our offering.
All kidding aside - I feel for those who spent so much time and energy on it. Know that it was thoroughly appreciated while it stood. Hard to imagine what sort of person finds something that cool in the middle of the park and decides the world would be even better if it were destroyed.
I'm sure glad I had a chance to see it.
Looks like ਬਿਨ ਯਾਮੀਨ has posted since, so he must have escaped unharmed.
I'm afraid I won't be free to help tuesday evening. If there's more left to do afterward, let us know.
After recieving a very sad call from Lowteck, further reconnaissance was conducted this evening by Rainbow Bright & I. Sad indeed. The total is 4 trilithons intact & standing, 2 trilithons fully intact but tipped, and 4 in need of repairs. Two are noticeably worse than the others.
I am happy to note that all but one of the doors are structurally whole, much broken glass though. The door with vines and a column painted on it (done very painstakeingly by lank) has broken at the botton where the eye bolts went through, but with the drill it to can be salvaged.
Glad to see anna got photos up so fast, we took a bunch more that I will post somewhere eventually.
Tonight I will be in mourning. (jack daniels to the rescue) *sob*
Speechless!
IT MUST HAVE BEEN THOSE BLASTED GARDENERS!!!
This really is the worst news....I have to work tonight but let me know if there is something I can do after 10pm....
30 minutes later and I am still sad....my heart broke a little when I read the news....
turn that frown upside down!
WERE GOING TO FIX IT TONIGHT (we'll try at least)
i can be there most likely by 6:45....see you then.
Doorhenge is resurrected!
And stabilized as well...
sorry for the crapfest photo- I fergot to take one before it got all dark n stuff.
Seriously… I did not skip out on work pretending to go to the dentist and rebuild it by my lonesome only to duck out before everyone arrived and walk around the other way bearing whiskey and acting surprised.
No Seriously… the spirit of San Francisco reassembled door henge… not me.
Seriously.
Actually it was my daughter and I who fixed it this afternoon.
I had shown it to my son in it's glory a couple weeks ago, but my daughter had never seen it. After picking her up at school today we were driving by the buffalo and she said she'd like to see it, so I took her over.
On seeing the awful vandalism done to the lovely graffiti painted doors, we decided to try and throw a couple back up. Without a hammer it was a little tough to drive the stakes back into the ground, so we went home, got a hammer, and came back.
We worked for about 3 hours or so putting the 6 henges that had fallen back up and pounding them back into place. I lifted and held the henges up while she hammered. A couple came out a little crooked, but we fixed whatever we could. Unfortunately many of the brackets were bent and the bolts torn out, so some are less sturdy than they were, but we tried to bend things back into shaped as much as possible.
The satellite dish was a gift from some of the weekend revelers, as were some mardi gras beads, a comb, and a little stuffed koala bear on a ceramic stand. I unbent the satellite dish and put it in an appropriate place while my daughter wrapped the beads around the comb and hung them on one of the doors. The koala we placed by the explanation notice.
It was just one of those moments when you see something wrong and you just fix it, almost without thinking. All in all it was a lovely afternoon.
Back home, I figured there must be some task I could apply this to, and there is (Restoration) but I'm not at a level yet to add that task. I guess I'd better get to work.

JTony Smith & Daughter, I love you!
Yeah, I second Yellowbear. You guys rock! Thanks!
