Journey To The End Of The Night - Gothenburg 2012

The city spreads out before you. Rushing from point to point, lit by the slow strobe of fluorescent buses and dark streets. Stumbling into situations for a stranger's signature. Fleeing unknown pursuers, breathing hard, admiring the landscape and the multitude of worlds hidden in it.

For one night, drop your relations, your work and leisure activities, and all your usual motives for movement and action, and let yourself be drawn by the attractions of the chase and the encounters you find there.

We will play this during FSCONS 2012, the largest gathering for free culture, free software and a free society in the Nordic countries. You are welcome to join the race, even if you are not taking part in the event, but it is oh so worth it.

Mayor Daley's Graffiti Busters

Take back your neighborhood! Paint over some advertising; ideally, this involves matching the color of the surface the ad is posted on, but an alternative is to use industrial, drab grey. Under no circumstances should you paint over advertising with anything but a solid color. Easy targets are iPod or movie posters on vacant buildings. Bonus points for hard targets like bus station ads or billboards. Before and after photos are, of course, a must.

With The Tour? We Are The Tour!

Pick something about which you know a good bit, and a place that exhibits this sort of thing, or a route through the city.

Once you've decided on the when, what and where of your tour, advertise it. Show up with a sign that says, "Free tour starts here!" and give your tour.

Invite people fill out a feedback survey on your tour for additional documentation.

Avant-Caricature

Modern, conceptual art has found a home in the scholarly walls of museums - but will it do the same on a street corner? In the hands of the everyman, will modern non-objectivism be appreciated?

Your task is to find out - set up an easel, a chair, and a paper pad and offer your services as a modern caricature artist. Think Rothko, think Mondrian. (If a bright eyed child sits in front of you, draw a yellow circle, for example.)

Make sure you document (photograph) your adventure, record your customer's reactions, and show us the art you made.

If people actually decide to pay you for your "art" - give their money back (still give them the drawing) , and explain sf0 to them.

Fruit Invasion

Purchase/aquire many (a pound or two) small fruits (I've found kumquats to be very appropriate) which will not easily be squished. Slip them into strangers' pockets, tie them by threads from trees, or in some other manner help fruit invade the city.

Curated Public Works

Create and place title cards with title, dates, and media descriptors near several public works projects (construction, street repair, utility servicing, etc.) Lead guided tours through your gallery. Describe lucidly the groundbreaking features of the work and speculate on the artists' intentions.

Maps, audio devices and headphones given to gallery patrons for self-guided tours are also acceptable but proof will require both a post of your narrative track and photos of your many patrons.

Exquisite Dérive

Go on a walking journey and every fifteen feet draw a chalk arrow in the direction you're going. At the end of the trip, leave a big pile of chalk so a stranger can continue your journey.

OR

Walk a short route alone, then send a collaborator the last segment of your trip so that they can pick up where you left off. You may complete this in separate cities by using more generic instructions (e.g. walk three blocks, then turn left). Finally, walk the complete route you and your collaborators have created.
