Tasks / Exquisite Dérive

Go on a walking journey and every fifteen feet draw a chalk arrow in the direction you're going. At the end of the trip, leave a big pile of chalk so a stranger can continue your journey.

Walk a short route alone, then send a collaborator the last segment of your trip so that they can pick up where you left off. You may complete this in separate cities by using more generic instructions (e.g. walk three blocks, then turn left). Finally, walk the complete route you and your collaborators have created.

Oooooh, like hashing, but without the running and drinking. Well, probably the running, anyway.

As far as I can tell, most hashes use chalk. Do they mark out hashes some other way where you live?

I followed a short chalk trail, starting two blocks away from my house with a huge "SF0" in light purple/pink chalk, around my neighborhood for a short distance a week or two ago. I am now sure that it was a praxis for this task... but there is no posted completion! :(

Followed a Derive Last Night
posted by JTony Loves Brains on January 20th, 2009 12:10 PM

I followed what appeared to be an exquisite derive last night. Saw arrows near the Yerba Buena Gardens and MOMA, and followed them all the way out and around several interesting locations till I ended up on Market around Beale. I'm sure I joined the derive abot halfway through, but I haven't backtracked yet.

Arrows are stilll clear and visible, and makes for a lovely evening walk. Assuming it was not someone from SF0... weird initials in several spots but I didn't write them down. Worth your time, though.

"Go on a walking journey..." I thought about how many arrows would be needed to justify this task as completed. Surely more than four. Eight? Sixteen? I thought sixteen would be a good number. Four hours of tasking for a level three ta...

**Quick note - the first part of this praxis was done back in the heady days of April 2008, whereas the final part was only just done today. Therefore, any notes about times in the first bit should probably totally be ignored, as I'd assume you would...

Lovely night, too lovely to spend another instant of it indoors. This is summer darn it. We love doing chalk drawing anyway and when we found this task we knew it would be perfect. Towards the end, I'll admit it, we kind of ran out of ideas for wa...
