Mihi by Ty Ødin

March 7th, 2010 12:29 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: In Maori culture, when you formally introduce yourself in a meeting house it is called a "Mihi". You tell people your canoe, tribe, sub-tribe and family, but you ALSO identify specific geological features to which you "belong". For example, "your" lake, mountain, river, forest etc.

Chose at least three geographical features that you consider "yours". Document them.

The Original

Ladies, gentlemen, and children of all ages! Allow me to welcome you to Ty Odin's praxis for "Mihi"! Today you will be taken through this praxis with three distinct parts, the past, the present, and the future in that order! Much will be revealed in the text, but even more in the pictures below!

I began this praxis by laying out a rough list of things that I considered mine. The list failed me, being either to long or to short at any given time, so I decided to go for a walk and figure this out by letting my body guide me to where it wanted to go. I set out with nothing more than my fedora and phone in hand.

My first stop, as decided by my wandering legs and distracted mind, was the forest.

As a child I moved from house to house often, sometimes transitioning twice in the same year of school. This forest is where I made my first (accidental) friends and began to open my eyes to nature. I used to camp and fish here in the hot Texas summers. I even built a real treehouse! Somewhere between 9th and 10th grade I lost my interest in the forest, but this year a fe2w friends and I reclaimed the old campsite, centered around the ruins of my tree house. I hadn't been back in a few months and seeing how greatly the rain had effected the area was shocking. What was once a dry lowland was now a swamp.

For old time's sake I started a small campfire in our neglected firepit and watched it burn down, memories of camping and the deep discussions that were had over many such a campfire racing through my mind. main_firepit588532.jpg

I left the forest shortly after the fire burned down, off to find the next part of my Mihi.

The country club, as any who read my other recent praxis know, has been closed down since the first of the year. In that time I cleaned up the trash from their walled in courtyard and have been using it as an escape and a place to practice parkour and generally get in shape. It has become my own personal hideaway. Both the wooden gates are usually locked (or atleast look locked) so it is very rarely inhabited by others. I have put so much work into the abandoned yard that I feel as though it is mine now, in spirit if not legally. If nothing else I have definitely made my mark.
The third part of my Mihi came to me as I sat on a raised wall inside the yard. I removed my fedora and studied it a bit, realizing that I have owned the fedora longer than I have known anyone that is not related to me by blood or marriage.

I found the hat at one of the garage sales that my father and I frequented in my youth, and it has stuck with me ever since. When I wear the black fedora it's like putting on a mask. Normally I'm just Ty, but when I don the fedora I can be anyone or anything. I am fearless and adventurous, willing to go to any length for a good story to tell or a fun experience to be had. Looking back now, some of the best moments of my life have been when I was wearing that hat. It is uniquely mine, and I can find strength in it as a shaman might a totem, it connects me to a persona who is entirely more suave and courageous than myself.
