Contents of a Character's Wallet by Rubin Starset

June 2nd, 2006 11:14 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: In Jack Finney's short story, "Contents of a Dead Man's Pocket", the character - clinging to the side of a building - imagines what the world will think of him if they only have the contents of his pockets to consider.

Empty your pockets, your wallet, your purse out onto a table- tally the contents and tell us what the world would think of you, if they had only those effects to consider. Then, decide upon one thing to add to the contents of your pockets, your wallet, or your purse, which will better enunciate the truth of your person to the world.

I'm glad this task came along as it gives me a chance to take a snap shot of all that I've got in my awesome bag.

My bag is me. Most people tend to freak out when they see the number of things I keep with me everywhere I go. Like WHAT THE FUCK IS A STATE ABOUT TO BLOW UP? My response is I just like being prepared. I once had someone go into some deep religious speak about if it's my time, it's my time, and nothing I've got with me will keep me from that.

I cannot point out how great it is to keep a first aid kit with you at all times.
Tape and zip ties rocks, so does water.
The Petzl head lamp I have is the most amazing thing ever, one of the best gifts ever.
A compass is something everyone should have.

Two items I'm missing are a hand full of audio cables that are currently on loan at NIMBY, and a pair of clean socks I keep with me all the time. I have been known to keep a pack of nuts with me, or a few Clif bars. My ThinkPad 570 also makes a few round trips with all this stuff. The Gerber on the side is out on loan, the camera I was using at the time (duh).

Tonight I'm adding a 1 GB USB drive, the iPod is great for storage and all, but nothing beats a little drive. I plan to keep a copy of photos I've taken in the past week, maybe a bootable version of Ubuntu, Knoppix or DSL (I used to keep DSL on a disc in my bag too, but the disc got fucked up quick).

I'll also want to keep a copy of my bookmarks on the drive. If someone happened to go through my USB drive, maybe they'll find out about SF0.
