Find something. Write about it. by S 4, space bug
June 19th, 2006 12:03 AMIt wasn't dirt. It was shimmering and moving and perfectly lit.
I had found a pile of bugs! I'm guessing they are new bugs, as there are macaroni-like fragments mixed in with them. Maybe they are mating? Not sure. But boy do they love that light. Plenty of other lights on this street went unmolested.
So one of these bugs, and I must apologizing for not knowing what kind of bug, has a pretty high creepy factor on its own, but thousands in one little place... ick.
shudder. gross. I had to come back and film it.
Thoroughly fascinating.
The main thought that I took away from this find was:
"I'm really glad that they really like lights. Imagine if their main desire was to swarm humans like that."

Looks to be mayflies. You captured them during their few-hour life spans!
I think I wouldn't like to stumble across that, but the photographs you took are beautiful.
The thing that doesn't come through in the video that totally deserves mention is the *sound*. There was this low level whirring from all the flappy wings. It was really fascinating and really kinda gross.
Ooh! hey! I'm a collaborator now!
(mental note: whining works!)
i thought they might be, but I'm far from a bug expert.
They live as adults for two nights, and spend that time mating while swarming.
Creepy factor increase:
Adults have no working Mouth parts!
Spacebug and I walked by the site again this morning. And someone had swept the mass of carcasses into the gutter. A huge ball of wings and bodies.
No mouth-parts? I award bonus points for no mouth-parts!
eeek!
