The Aesthetics of Minutiae by Allie Schrader
September 5th, 2006 9:13 PMAll those paintings of women, in art galleries, surprised at private moments. Nymph Sleeping. Susanna and the Elders. Woman Bathing, one foot in a tin tub -- Renoir, or was it Degas? Both, both women plump. Diana and her maidens, a moment before they catch the hunter's prying eyes. Never any paintings called Man Washing Socks in Sink.
--Margaret Atwood, The Blind Assassin
Create a visual depiction of a private moment that no one is likely to care about.
Class Taking Notes,
there is nothing glamorous about city college, nor sitting in on someone else's class when you don't even go to that school. But there is was, this is an art history class, and there was nothing glamorous at all about it.

I love this drawing, and not just because at first glance I thought the person at the front left was a Muppet.. first, second, third, fourth and fifth glance infact. Not glamorous you say? How glamorous is a muppet in (not)your art history lesson.
This sketch reminds me of this poem:
My stomach growls, my eyes wander
I sit & draw, my time I squander
I sketch the teacher, the clock, my shoe
The ink runs wild, I think of you.
I'm asked a question, I sit & stare
The guy behind me kicks my chair
He breaks the trance, I reply in turn
This class is boring, no stuff to learn
Again I look from side to side.
Others have boredom they can not hide.
Behind me someone blows their nose
Some crack their knuckles, some tap their toes
I want to scream and shriek & shout
Please class be over, let me out.
Ten minutes left, the clock ticks slow
It must be broken, go hands, go
