Pirate Radio: Phase 1 by Ation Song

September 24th, 2006 1:58 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Create a pirate radio station by any means you have at your disposal. See these instructions if you wish. It is OK if your station's range is relatively small.

You will need this radio station for Pirate Radio: Phase 2.

I have an old electronic circuit kit that has plans to build your own radio station that casts an AM signal. I included some pictures of the finished circuit as well as the video of me trying to get it to cast a signal. I still haven't found the perfect distance the receiver (in this case my old Walkman chanelled through my computer speakers) needs to be from the transmitter and I'm still working out the frequencies needed, but you can see in the video that changing the tuning of the transmitter and moving the transmitter and receiver farther apart changes the signal received (and it sounds pretty sci-fi-awesome too). At some points, my "testing...testing" actually comes through to the receiver a little, too.

I have fond childhood memories of the electronic kits from Radio Shack with the spring terminals and various components. I remember building a transmitter and hiding it under the bed in my little sister's room to spy on her and her friends... and being really disappointed that between the static and poor microphone I couldn't make out what they were saying.
