I know this happened a few years ago, and I should thusly be over it... however...
Clay Aiken was the real winner of American Idol season 2.
They say it was Ruben Studdard. This was a hoax. Aiken had been leading the voting up until the final episode, and the final episode vote was supposedly very close. It became very clear afterward that Aiken was the real winner as he sold many more albums than Studdard. Still, there has been no changing of crowns. They're going to stick to their story.
If you don't believe me, you can visit the Wikipedia page on Aiken:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clay_Aiken#_note-3
and look under the American Idol section of the biography. Then congratulate yourself on knowing the truth.
Is this inconsequential? Maybe. But if they're lying about this, who knows what else they are lying about?
