Language "Encryption" by Carrie

October 25th, 2006 9:41 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Using online translation tools, "encrypt" some text (that you write or find) by translating it multiple times into different languages and then back into English.

For instance, "The drive to play San Francisco Zero" translated from English to German to French to Italian to English again becomes "The order of Saint game Francisco".

I tried a few phrases at Babel Fish. I started with a humble little quote from Socrates, but some how a number "4" popped up in the translation and screwed everything up.

A song lyric by Roy Orbison was too long and the fish didn't want to translate.

So I wound up deciding to translate a saying that my friend Evil Sue and I used to write on our high school hallway walls with sharpie marker, you know, back in the '90's.

(Starting in English: )
I get off on exits.

(to Portuguese)
Eu começo fora em saídas.

(to French)
Je commence dehors dans des sorties.

(to German)
Ich beginne draußen in Ausgangen.

(translates back to English as:)
I begin outside in Ausgangen.
