Object Annotation by Dale Housden

January 16th, 2008 2:31 PM / Location: 50.916143,3.2217407

INSTRUCTIONS: Pick a local public object that you enjoy and leave a note on it describing your feelings in great detail.

I live in a fairly quiet neighbourhood of a fairly quiet city (Izegem) in a fairly quiet country (Belgium). At the entrance to the neighbourhood there's a traffic island with a sculpture of some sort of approximation of a human on top of a small hill.
After much question asking, I learned that the statue is supposed to be the sentinel of the neighbourhood. I'd never heard of such a thing before, and I don't really know if it works, but now I think about it I've been living here for about 3 years now and nothing really bad has happened to me so I guess its doing its job.
So I decided to give a little thanks to the sentinel by writing a letter of appreciation to it.
Because the sculpture was made here I figured he/she speaks the local language - Dutch - so I wrote the letter in that so that the sentinel, and maybe other passers-by, would understand it too.

English translation of the letter

"You are our neighbourhood sentinel. You stand here on your little hill with your strange sticks, just standing. And protecting us. I don't really know from what or from who you're protecting us, but I'm still happy that you're around.
We should really show a little more love for you. You stand here through day and night, rain and snow, never distracted by cars or bikes or anything. I'd like to have as much patience and vigilance as you, but I don't think that will ever happen.
Thankyou for all your efforts, it's much appreciated"

I attached the letter on my way to work at 7:20am..

And then hoped it would still be there when I went back home to eat lunch, however it was gone. It's been really windy lately and I guess it could have just blown away - I only had scotch tape available to fasten it on. Then again it could have been removed. Only the sentinel knows and it isn't talking!

Are cities there as anti-anyone-changing-anything-public-even-in-a-non-permanent-fashion as they are in the places I live (i.e. very)?

Also, I wanted to vote for being in (from?) Belgium and joining SF0, but I decided that should go on player portrait instead.

[[edit: redacting misreading of coordinates ]]

I consider your home nation a sort of Disneyland-meets-Shangri-La of Beer, how wonderful for tasking.

I really like that sculpture - I wish it were protecting the Lower Haight (my neighborhood in San Francisco). Who did you ask to find out that it's the neighborhood sentinel?

I'm not so sure about the cities' policies about changing things, but I would guess they're fairly strict, things are fairly old fashioned here. Also I'm in Belgium, not from Belgium, although within a couple of weeks I should have nationality (not that that counts towards being 'from' Belgium though, I suppose). Actually I'm Australian which should make it easier for Susy to figure out which bay I was talking about on my profile picture.

I first asked my wife about the sculpture but she didn't know. The city website didn't provide any answers either, so I just asked a guy I work with who lives near here.

Welcome to the game. It's exciting to see more people from distant lands joining and tasking.
