Irregular Animal Documentation by Emily Passerine

November 24th, 2005 10:49 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Document an animal you rarely see. Domesticated animals - whether friend, foe, or feral - don't count except in extraordinary circumstances. Beyond that, you're on your honour; in some areas, a squirrel might well be a rare sighting, just as in other areas it's quite common to see munk parakeets (i.e. the pet store kind) perched on telephone wires along Woodlawn Street...

My friend Sean came to visit me in Chicago in October so we made Jack-o-lanterns. Mine was of a devilish grin and Sean's was Ortiz (a regular animal). One morning when I took out the trash I noticed that their faces had been eaten out. I was pretty upset (because they had been excellent pumpkins) and confused (because I couldn't figure out how it had happened) so I just left them there and didn't do anything about it. But then the next morning I was sipping tea and looking out on my back porch, and that's when I saw this squirrel stuffing his face with our beautiful hallowed gourds. When he saw that he was being watched, he scurried a little ways away, whence I grabbed my camera and caught him on his second go-at-it. He was totally shameless. I didn't tell Sean about it for a little while because I was sad and didn't want to upset him too. But eventually I did tell him, mostly because I just downloaded Picasa and so I was able to put the pictures into a photo collage that kind of made the whole thing seem a little funny. I don't like to clean so I ended up just leaving the devoured remains outside until all that was left were the bright orange candles.

Squirrels

I'm originally from Chicago, so I can confirm that the squirrels are pretty fearless. Sometimes vicious. At least the ones in Rogers Park were.
