Compile Some Footage by Flitworth

November 15th, 2007 6:47 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Compile some footage.

The song is Time Rift by an Australian group called Didjitalis.

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

The final product is nothing like I what I had in mind when I accepted the task but I feel that a few hundred dollars of equipment and software stand between me and my "artistic vision". I was very keen to complete the task for a variety of reasons and, really, as with all artistic endeavors, I'm never going to be pleased with the final product anyway.
The squid and Chupa-Chup distribution mechanism video was shot after midnight in my surprisingly busy neighborhood. All the other footage is stuff I've been collecting up since arriving and remembering that I can take (bad) video with my paleolithic-era digital camera. The vending machines in Asia put all others to shame. I actually had to play rock, paper, scissors to get my lollipops! In Japan I found one that was a claw machine that dived into a tank of live sea animals. If you think winning your girlfriend a PowerPuff Girl doll is hard try grabbing something with a giant sucker on it that's attached to a glass tank.

Awesome, specially the train(?) flyby footage.

A) The quality of our available technology should never prevent us from creating with it; your footage is not an HD commercial music video, but it is no less legitimate. Thanks for making an example of this point.

B) The train footage looks a lot like Chicagø. Paul K. Miller (DJ Spooky) spoke here last night, and showed an video installation that was aesthetically much like yours (but shot in Chicagø); he displayed it using 7 projectors and 4.1 surround sound, and while I liked what he did, your footage tells a better story -- and will likely stick in my mind for quite a bit longer.

C) My favorite sequence is of you turning away from the camera. The fragments of the gesture are an eloquent illustration of my OCD.

I'm a huge fan of train footage, too. I'm planning to take a line out tonight that goes over the water on the way into Seoul proper to capture more film tonight. A really great example of this kind of imagery in a music video is the Chemical Brothers' Star Guitar video.
