Document Future by Flitworth

November 6th, 2007 7:13 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Document an instance of the Future.

This is one of those tasks that has been at the back of my mind for some time. I read one of the first completions in an attempt to get inspiration but floundered. Since I live in Seoul I am currently 13-14 hours ahead of the East coast of the US and thought it'd be kind of fun to play around with the fact that to an extent I live in the future compared to most (if not all) SF0 participants. However, even with the advantage of living in the future I didn't really have a good plan of execution aside from consistently emailing friends and family to inform them whether or not their day would be good or bad based on my own experience.

When I get a fortune cookie message that pleases me I save it and eat the cookie (somewhere I developed or internalized a superstition that if you want the fortune to come true you have to eat the cookie). Somewhere in my massive collection of junk is a fortune I got years ago that says, "You are a lover of words, one day you will write a book." That is my most favorite of all time. While fiddling around in my hotel in Osaka two fortune cookie fortunes slipped out of my wallet.

The two currently in my possession say "Your principles mean more to you than any money or success" and "Your present plans are going to succeed." I believe I received both from a Chinese restaurant in my old neighborhood in Maryland. The second fortune I believe I got the day we went there for my friend Rebecca's birthday but I am uncertain, I know only that I got it over the summer and that it was a message about the future.

For far too long after I completed my Master's Degree I worked thankless jobs in the DC area, culminating in a legal temp position wherein I fantasized about pulping the eyeballs of a narcissistic co-worker. Finally, I developed a Plan to escape. I had applied to so many real jobs that had left me weeping and miserable when they rejected me that I loathed discussing applying to jobs with anyone; so I only would tell people I had a Plan.

The Plan was to get a job teaching English in Korea and move away from DC to not only sate my appetite for travel but to avoid crossing the line into homicide at the law firm. I choose to believe that my fortune cookie was a message from the future. I now live in Seoul, teach English and have not wanted to commit permanent grievous bodily harm to anyone since mid-October. As I am living the future stated by the fortune I am also documenting it fully in a blog (mit video!), to which Spidere can attest. I am loathe to connect it publicly via SF0 but wish to include it for a more thorough completion (please don't make me regret the sincerity of my efforts). I will also let you all know when I write that book.

After Graduate School

After Graduate School

This is me in the back of a Maryland State Police car the summer after graduate school. It is clear that this is where I was going to end up, on a more coercive basis, if I didn't leave the law firm.

Yes. Yes, they do.

Yes. Yes, they do.

One of two relevant fortunes I received this year. Piled on top of US, Japanese and Korean currency. Don't be fooled by all the zeros - those are equivalent to about ten dollars right now. Of course, given the dollar's slide lately, I'm not converting them any time soon.

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday

I think this was the day I received my message of the Future.

The Date Book

The Date Book

Here is the only place I documented my Plan to any great degree. The first instance is my note to send information to a friend of a friend whose aunt runs an English teaching academy in Seoul.

The Plan does seem to be succeeding....

Success!

Success!

I came. I stressed. I taught!

This is the emblem of my hagwon with, of course, my document of the Future on top.

Now I'm happy about my job as evidenced by the fact that I almost smile in this photograph taken on November 5th on "The Tempozan Worlds Largest Giant Wheel".

Took me a paragraph or two to realize you meant fortune cookie. :)

But I like it. I have kept a number of fortunes over the years, and have tried to work some of them into various projects/ideas.

My favourite is one i got a few years ago when some friends and I went to a Chinese restaurant after our first semester finals were over... It says: "Keep your plans secret for now"

Fortune cookies are such a tasty embodiment of The Future.

And your handwriting is a beautiful.

Caleb - that is a most wondrous fortune! I did fumble a bit on the write-up. I think my English has gone downhill and sideways since I came to Korea.

The Bandit - Cheers! :)

I like tasks that get spiced up by a bit of life-story drama.

I reckon you are indeed the furthest east SF0 player. For now.

Unfortunate.

I'm afraid this praxis does not document an instance of the Future.

It only validates notions of the past and present.

the Future only has seven legs.

You presume that our realities wholly intersect and that your seven legged friend is the sole iteration of the Future? The Future is now and now is not an arachnid:)
