Sunset by Chachi, Erik Ogan

July 22nd, 2006 1:37 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Stand at the westernmost point of San Francisco and photograph the sunset. Watch for the green flash!

Using Google Maps, we determined that the westernmost point of San Francisco was where the old Sutro baths were. We picked up some dinner and then started cross the city to get to the shore in time before sunset, which was at 8:27 PM.

It was a fairly clear night, though there was a bit of haze at the horizon. We watched four or five tanker ships move out of the Bay and into open water. We were a bit concered that they would block the sun, but luckily they were moving fast enough that they didn't get in the way.

Sadly, we did not see a green flash. I think this is because of the fog at the horizon. The clouds actually made the sun look pixelated as it got closer to the horizon.

Hahaha... your photos remind me of a very funny moment that I had at the camera obscura a few years ago. The room was dark, the image of the water rippling across the dish was awesome, and it was very romantic. Sunset was approaching and the oscillating lens was fixed on the sun. As it descended toward the horizon, we discussed the green flash and were very excited about watching for it. The sun dropped even further and then a big dark blob entered the picture from the side of the dish. It was a giant container ship... and... No... it couldn't possibly... yes. it was going to... Ironically, as the sun just about touched the horizon, the ship passed in front of it. There was no green flash for us that day, but it made for a lot of laughing.

It seems like you nearly had the same experience.
