Equal Time With Door To Door Religious Solicitors by Gadget

June 19th, 2006 4:10 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Instead of saying "No thank you" and slamming the door, invite them in with the agreement that if you listen to what they say, they have to listen to you for the same amount of time. Pick a topic of personal interest to you.

I inadvertantly completed this task.

I recently had a little cocktail party and hot tub night. One of my guests asked if she could invite two of her friends. She assured me that these guys were great and would fit in with our crowd. On the night of the party, I got a call from this friend saying that she had invited her friends, but that she was going to be late. I told her that it was no problem and that I'd be happy to take care of them and make them feel welcome.

Jump ahead a few hours. The soiree was underway and, while there were only a few of us so far, we had already downed our first bottle of wine. The doorbell rings and there are the two guys. Trying to avoid the awkwardness of their friend not being there, I merilly welcome them in. They come in and I offer them a glass of wine. Oddly they refuse. I introduce myself and they respond by saying their names followed by the church of jesus christ of later-day saints. In a very awkward and seemingly eternal moment, the last few minutes of my life rewound and I realized the mistake I had made.

Not knowing how to correct my error gracefully, I decided to go with it and see what would happen. I started asking them about their evening and what it was like going door-to-door. I figured that it must be pretty rough getting the door slammed in your face over and over. They didn't seem to mind the questions and told me all about it. They said it was pretty rough, but that the occasional person that wanted to talk with them or needed some sort of help made it all worth it. We went on to quiz them about how their program worked and we found it really quite fascinating. Well, after about half an hour of talking to these kids, the party was in full swing. As several people started removing their clothing to get in the hot tub, these kids started feeling uncomfortable and excused themselves. Before they left, however, they offered to come back the next morning and help with anything we needed. They went on to say how it was part of their mission to help people. I was half tempted to ask them to come help me clean up in the morning, but I just didn't have the nerve. I saw them out and (thankfully) never heard from them again. I'm sure it was the highlight of their evening.
