Object Annotation by Zachary Dean Norman

March 17th, 2008 10:47 AM / Location: 41.928415,-87.70714

INSTRUCTIONS: Pick a local public object that you enjoy and leave a note on it describing your feelings in great detail.

I felt unequipped to express my feelings about an object I knew so little about. I therefore felt it was necessary to first ask the object some questions concerning its abilities, relations, animateness and consciousness. Once I receive answers to my questions my uncertainties about this object will be quelled and I will be able to express my feelings unabashedly. Until then, this interrogative annotation will have to do.

The contents of my note:

Logan Square Monument,

Does the eagle which sits on top of you have an unobstructed view of the Chicago skyline?

Are you two in close communication?

Are relations between Doric Columns and eagles still strained?

Are you capable of answering any of these questions?

Sincerely,

A concerned resident of the neighborhood for which you are an emblem.

The Note

The Note

I had a few questions for my local phallus.

The Tools

The Tools

Supplies I used to support and waterproof my note.

Measurements

Measurements

I diligently measured the size of the note so I could cut an equally sized piece of pizza box to paste to it, providing structural protection against the forces of nature.

Pizza Box Back

Pizza Box Back

Pizza Box measured, cut and photographed.

Mounted

Mounted

My note mounted to the pizza box.

Laminated

Laminated

My laminated note. Duct tape and an old plastic bag were used to waterproof my note.

Laminated Frontal

Laminated Frontal

Frontal view of laminated note.

Documentation of me holding note.

Twined Note

Twined Note

This is an image documenting my original plan in its nascent stage. I had planned on using the twine shown here to tie my note around the base of the monument.

Logan Square Monument

Logan Square Monument

This is the monument for which I wrote the note. I had planned on using the twine seen in previous picture to tie the note around the base of the monument but I grossly misunderestimated the circumference of seen monument. I therefore had to entertain other possibilities.

Note on Lamppost

Note on Lamppost

I ended up tying the note around a lamppost in front of the monument. I feel this was a satisfactory alternative because the note is clearly visible to anyone approaching the statue from the front.

Note on Post

Note on Post

The note on the post.

View of note, posts, monument.

View of note, posts, monument.

This image was taken from the front of the monument. Note the conspicuousness of note to anyone approaching the column. Also note the eagle which sits on top of column. I specifically address the eagle's ability to see the Chicago skyline from its perch in my note.

I applaud your completion. I like that you took the consciousness of the monument in thought, it expresses a real respect for the structure.

Well done! A brilliant introduction to the game!

Chicagø is on fire, if I may say so.

Nice..definitely think the lamppost was a better idea, then people wouldn't think you obstructed it at all. love the originality as well as the lamination..haha...cowabunga bro
