I am a teacher. Behavior Specialist. One day a boy came to middle school wearing a hat made to look like a block of cheese, like one of those Green Bay Packer hats. Right away, before school even started, kids starting asking him questions about it and calling him "Cheesehead", not really teasing him, just responding to what seemed his prompt at attention. But he didn't expect that. Instead he shouted "Leave me alone!" and "No I don't like the Packers! Don't you get it?! I just wanted to wear a funny hat today" He was beside himself and ended up seeking solace in the office.
So, it being my job, I responded and told him I was sorry he was upset but that he should have expected the reactions though I don't think he really heard me. In the end, I had to confiscate the cheese hat, for the day. Later in the day he asked if he could have it back early and I said no, he could at the end of the day. He was dissapointed but I dont think he was ready to wear the hat at school yet.
