RAoK/SAoB: the Random Acts of Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty Task 2 by Jackie H
October 21st, 2006 1:51 PM / Location: 37.799247,-122.2306Interactions:
With our Burning Mannish landlord, Ross, last night:
Ross: "Hey, what are you doing?"
Me: "Cutting out wire mesh to make these curly things. I was gonna take them down soon." (I had hung some from the house to test.)
Ross: "No, I think they're totally cool, keep doing what you're doing! They would look really cool with candles, or if you dangled plants from them or something."
Me: "Yeah, maybe I'll do that later. I was thinking of just hanging them from different trees in the neighborhood."
Ross: "Yeah, that's really cool. Good night!"
With Becki, coming outside to see what's up:
Becki: "HEY! I didn't know you were an ARTIST!"
Me: "Yeah, I don't know, I have all this energy now..."
Becki: "Yeah, cool, you've been doing so much stuff lately. It looks like Christmas!"
With the neighbors:
Neighbor: "Hey what're you doing?"
Me: "I don't know. I was cutting out all this wire mesh last night and I noticed the scraps were curling, so I decided to make a bunch of these curly wire things...I thought it would be pretty if I hung them from this tree. Is it okay with you that I'm doing this?"
Neighbor: "Yeah, don't worry, keep going. I just thought maybe you were making a bug-catcher or something."
Me: "No, I just thought it'd be pretty."
Neighbor: "Okay *chuckle* see you later..."
There's about 36 curly pieces in all, 3 bigger ones made out of 6 tied together, and then the rest just dangling by themselves from orange thread. I bled a lot during this task because the wire cut me (I considered continuing and doing the "Massive Replication" task), so maybe some of my blood is on it too, which would be sort of nice. I would have taken a picture, because my hand was pretty spectacular last night, but I don't have a digital camera, and borrowing someone's before I cleaned my hand would have required awakening my roommates. Sorry!

Wow, thanks Rubin.
Those scissors are really cool (possibly cooler?)--did you do that?
Mella got around 200 scissors. A few of us went to this park behind the Metreon and helped her lay them out. A bunch of photos were taken. We then tied them to a tree. It was fun.
I like your project, it's art that could just be left there and look normal yet not. And the fact that you put a bit of hard work into cutting all of them up rocks. All we did was place them in interesting patterns.
Mella's idea (or thing) was that no matter what you have, just as long as you have a lot of them, and they're placed well, all of them will always look cool. After laying under the scissors tree we got yelled at by a security guard, whom demanded we take them down or get kicked out. It was funny.
Yeah, these are great. It's been entertaining having Jackie H. live with me. Now I get to enjoy a piece of installation art (aside from dangling shoes from telephone wires) in the ghetto East Oakland. I was actually looking at these wondering how you cut them without getting cut and assumed you wore gloves. Blood is cool though.
Buy hey, next time you can bleed on my camera, I don't mind.
