Automation Part 1 by Lizard Boy

January 19th, 2007 11:52 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: For each hour of the day, document at least one automatic operation that is being performed for your benefit.

The times which are listed as xx00 are just things that happened in that hour, because I don't have a good guess as to what minute it happened. Also used for things that are fairly continuous, and happen lots of times, including in that hour.

0645: My alarm goes off.
0711: My computer starts up, and opens the GAIM login screen.
0815: A classroom projector displays notes during a classmate's presentation.
0935: The SF0 Daemon e-mails me to let me know I have a new message.
1018: The water pressure in the pipes makes the toilet flush.
1148: As I take a plate off the top of a stack, a spring underneath the stack pushes the rest of the plates up a little.
1240: A cell phone call is routed to the phone of someone I'm trying to locate.
1344: My refrigerator turns on, keeping the food inside cold.
1458: Gmail saves a draft of an e-mail I'm writing, making sure I don't lose my work.
1500: Flipping a light switch connects wires such that the lights in my room turn on.
1632: My web browser saves the data about a tab i accidentally closed, allowing me to restore it quickly.
1713: The heater in a friend's room, sensing that the room is cold, warms me, who is sitting on it.
1845: The tray return in the dining hall takes the tray and plates I was using where they need to go.
1900: Fans cool my computer, keeping it from overheating.
2000: I push a button on my pencil, which advances the lead.
2100: When I open a PDF it opens in Firefox, my preferred PDF viewer.
2200: I poke a friend, who jumps and yelps in a very satisfying way.
2352: I submit this task, and am given points for it.

Bonus stuff for the hours I wasn't awake:
GAIM constantly tells me who is away from their computer.
The card swipe at the dining hall takes a meal off my account.
Plants photosynthesize, releasing oxygen that I breathe and indirectly feeding me. (Not necessarily for, but definitely to, my benefit.)
My brain (if I may consider it separate for the moment) continually processes sensory data and filters it for importance before it comes to my conscious attention.
The campus mail server forwards all my e-mail to my preferred address.
Card swipes around campus unlock doors for me.
