Something For Nothing by Lizard Boy

March 31st, 2007 7:56 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Get something for nothing. Make something else with it. Give some to someone with no strings attached.

Important note: If you are from nearby, PLEASE DON'T TELL ANYONE ABOUT THIS TASK COMPLETION. It's validity relies on a particular person not knowing about it, so I want to make it as unlikely as possible that that person will find out.

There is an amazing table in one of the buildings on campus called the "free table". Signs around it read
"Everything on this table is free. Take it.
The table itself is not free."

On the table is a post-it note reading "Please do _not_ take the table!".

This table has had me thinking for a long time. I had an idea to turn a wooden thing with some rails on it into one of those toys that rotates and is slightly off balance in almost any orientation, so it wobbles around a lot before settling down. But if I gave someone something like that I feel like they'd just say "uh, okay" and not really care.

Then one day some stuff in German popped up, and all of a sudden I had the crazy idea of how to give someone something with no strings attached. What could have fewer strings attached than an untraceable note that is complete gibberish? So I snagged a pamphlet and what appeared to be a grammar book, and set about making a stereotypical "you can't tell who I am" note. I made sure that nobody saw me doing this, or saw evidence of me doing this, so that it couldn't be linked back to me. Unfortunately, I can't make it completely untraceable, as I need to post this proof. Incidentally, anyone who sees this who happens to be asked about the note, please don't lead people to me. Also, I'd post the text to make it easier to read, but then people would be able to search for a substring and find this page.

The hardest part of this task was the placement. It couldn't be anyone whose room I have easy access to, that would make me extremely suspect. However, the selfish me wanted it to be in my dorm, so I could see reactions more easily. I wanted to put it straight on someone's desk if possible, but if I couldn't manage that, I figured slipping it under someone's door would do.

I tried once to put it on someone's desk while their roommate was facing away from the door and had some music playing. Unfortunately I made too much noise and he turned around as I was placing it on the desk. I had to make some sort of lame "I'll give it to him later" excuse, and that person was permanently eliminated from the list of people I could give it to.

Finally I decided just to put it under someone's door, which I did on the same morning as our LED Installation task completion, because nobody was awake. I chose the particular person for a few reasons. First, he has a single. This means that there's no doubt as to who the letter is addressed to. Second, I see him on a fairly regular basis, but am not super close friends with him. This means that I can be selfish about being able to see reactions, without being immediately suspect (hopefully). Third, I suspect he won't browse through SF0 very much. See, I'm also going to be telling people about our LED Installation, because they've been curious. And, sadly, because I'm submitting this, I can't be completely untraceable.

On that note, again, if you're reading this and are not the person who got the note, but are from nearby, PLEASE DON'T TELL ANYONE!!

I'm really excited that this table exists.

Wort fur Wort....

I'd post the text, but then people could probably search for a substring and find this.

A sad method of delivery, but a method nonetheless. It disappeared the rest of the way under the door after this picture.
