Opera Mice
Tiny mice have evolved to survive in the harsh climate of the San Francisco Opera. This is an ongoing documentation that I will update as I see them. A picture of these furtive creatures is my ultimate goal.
October 30th, 2005: Upon being hired, I have observed several mousetraps spaced around the 4th floor administrative section of the building. Traps are baited with peanut butter.
March 4th, 2006: Single Mouse spotted on 4th floor administrative room. Running from hallway, under the door frame of the Opera Center. The small size of the mouse allowed it to slip easily under the door frame.
May 2006: Mousetraps remain unmolested.
June 15th, 2006: Mouse observed running from behind water cooler around corner of the basement. The basement is filled with costumes, hydraulic lifts and other theatrical infrastructure. I got a good look at the mouse while it ran and estimate it's length at 2.5 inches, not including tail. I postulate that the mouse might have been drinking the water that leeks from or condenses on the back of the water cooler.
July 17th, 2006: Mouse Encounter! Spotted Mouse in stairwell of the first floor, near the electrics office, just off stage right. Mouse was at bottom of stairs, when spotted it ran up the hallway, hiding behind the nearby water cooler. I attempted to use the worker's compensation binder to block it's escape from one end of the cooler. I approached the other side and met this tiny adorable rodent face to face. We looked at each other for a long time, and I cursed myself for not having my camera, or my camera-phone, on me. I tried to capture the mouse using an 8oz wax paper cup, and although I thought I had trapped it underneath the cup, when I pulled it up there was nothing their. You've won this round mouse.
