Aesthemati-Corporate Anthem by KenDragon

August 13th, 2006 1:02 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Contain your shock: the University of Aesthematics has neither an Alma Mater nor a Fight Song. Inarguably, we are a poorer community for it, but at this stage, a commissioned, traditional anthem would cast the shadow of simulacrum (or, at least, seem anachronistic). So we're ripping two pages from our Economist back issues: first, look not towards the stately secular hymns of the ivied institution, but the contemporary corporate power ballad; second, the selection of an anthem will be left to the free market - what you likes, you sings. All submissions will be linked from the U of A "About" page. Observations (neither requirements nor prohibitions): anthems are invariably very cantabile; anthems have lyrics, but these are frequently forgotten; it's not unheard-of for an anthem to borrow its tune from some other piece of music, and some corporate anthems have continued this practice (c.f. The Power of Sun, by Huey Lewis, et al). Bear in mind, when submitting proof, that the completed task page is mp3-friendly.

Warning: listening to this may cause your ears to bleed

What's really neat about the tasks I'm doing is that even though I can't get most of my friends to join SF0, they all seem to be pretty ok with me using them for tasks that I'm working on.

I think the easiest thing was choosing the song from which to base the corporate anthem on. After that it all went down hill. This is one of those tasks where you know you don't have a chance in hell of creating something great, so you just try to have fun with it.

I decided to do something a tad more edgy than Huey Lewis and I figured nine inch nails "Closer" was the best choice. With the help of a librarian friend of mine, I was able to locate an internet site where someone had created a .midi file of the song.

Then I wrote the lyrics and got an idea why I'm a computer tech and not a song writer by trade.

Then I recorded the song about 100 times using just my singing and got an idea why I'm a computer tech and not a singer by trade. I wasn't able to create anything I was willing to submit for this task.

Then I went and got someone else (the friend that helped me with the foreign language task) to help spread the pain a bit.

For those that wish to sing along, here are the lyrics.

Aesthemati-Corporate Anthem (NIN - closer)

we create art through expressionism
we create art through cubism
we create art through realism
we create art through minimalism

(Chorus)
make art package from the insane, make art sing me a story
make art Aesthemati-Corporate Anthem, make art wear your art as your sleeve
we want to create art like a prodigy
we want to paint you from the minds eye
we want to create art like a prodigy
our whole existence is art
art gets us closer to god

you can have Humanitarian Crisis
you can have The Biome Group
you can have BART Psychogeographical Association
you can have equivilenz

(Chorus)
make art Surveillance Camera Performance, make art Survival of the Strangest
make art Multi-Portrait, make art Sexually Originated Art
we want to create art like a prodigy
we want to paint you from the minds eye
we want to create art like a prodigy
our whole existence is art
art gets us closer to god

through every forest, above the trees
within my stomach, scraped off my knees
we drink the honey inside your hive
art is the reason we stay alive

- smaller

I wish the anthem were a BIT more singable, but hey, the United States National Anthem is less singable than this...
