You are your own ecosystem by Ladybug

INSTRUCTIONS: Document seven visible-to-the-naked-eye living things that are dependent on you for survival.

When I first read this, I thought, oh, no problem. There are surely 7 things which are dependent on me for their survival. But then as I pondered what to choose to document, it occurred to me that it seems rather arrogant to assume that things couldn't somehow survive without me. Even my kitties, which surely depend upon me, would most likely ingratiate themselves to some other person to get their fill of kitty treats and fresh water. And what about the birds that feast at my bird feeder? Surely they enjoy the ease at which they dine when presented with their nyjer seed, but of course they would find another source should my offerings end. So, instead of insisting that these things couldn't survive without me, I instead offer that my contributions towards their existence make them thrive rather than struggle on their own. That said, here is my list of 7 things that are glad I'm around to take care of them:

- smaller

Spathophyllum

Spathophyllum

I've got several houseplants which really do demand care. Don't water them and they get all wilty. In fact they’ll die for lack of attention. This plant was a gift of condolence when my mom died in 2001. How can I not water it? It’s amazing how it thrives. It is probably 3 times bigger than when I got it and it continues to flower after all these years. I think it’s her light shining through and appreciating my care.

Phalaenopsis

Phalaenopsis

I’ve had this orchid a number of years also. I admit I do give it orchid food from time to time, not just water. This one’s doing so well that it actually reproduced! See how it sent up a new plant, not just a flower spike? Then the new leaf part sent out a flower spike! I know I could separate the new bit from the old to make 2 plants, but somehow it seems happier like this for now.

Ficus

Ficus

This is my ficus. It's been depending on me for about 15 years now. It's really happy in it's bright light location, but it is a PAIN to water as it is up above a doorway.

Watering the ficus

Watering the ficus

See, I've got to climb up a ladder to get this one. It only gets water every 2 weeks or so but it refuses to die! How can I not take of something with this will to live?

Sunflowers

Sunflowers

Now we move to the garden. A Ladybug has to spend lots of time in the garden eating aphids and yummy bugs. These guys like their water and wouldn't be nearly so sunny if I neglected them!

Finches

Finches

The finches love the free handout of Nyjer seed in their bird feeder. Of course they also poach sunflower seeds when they are ready.

Goldfinches

Goldfinches

They're cute little guys, but are they dependent? I don't know, but they sure are happy.

Kitties

Kitties

Here are my 2 kitties (well one is actually a foster-cat.) They do their best to act independent, but they really do rely on me. And I know they appreciate it because they bring me furry little presents to show their affection. Sometimes they bring presents with feathers.

I like that you didn't just assume that they couldn't survive without you, how truely biome minded of you!

You strike me as a very caring person. And you must have a lovely house with all those plants in it.
