Confession by Ohrlyeh Totenkinder
April 25th, 2007 6:36 PMLee had gone to Seattle, leaving me in care of her 12lb Chihuahua Lugosi an three cats. Before she left I got the agonizing rundown of everything I should do to keep anything from happening to her "baby", and then she went over it again, right before she left after our third of fourth repeated round of instructions, my eyes were rolling back in my head. I did everything she asked me to..... except for one.
Lugosi is mostly an inside dog, but when he has been over at my house we have let him down into the shared back yard. He does what he does and runs back up. Our very downstairs neighbor own three rottweiler mixes. Soon after the guy moved in a couple months ago we started hearing hell hound barking whenever we brought Lugosi out, then I began to notice all the flowerbeds in the back yard being unceremoniously transplanted to the walkway. then there were the Kongs, giant rubber things that looked like they belonged on the end of a chain in medieval Europe and they were everywhere. These are big dogs.
I don’t like big dogs, I was chased around a tree by a pit bull when I was four. It also, on one occasion broke through a car window to kill the neighbors cat under our house. the occasion happened to be my birthday party. I don’t understand why people own killer dogs. Its kind of like owning a gun, but a gun that might randomly chew someone’s face off.
Within the list of anxiety, Lee had asked my to carry Lugosi down stairs.
Lugosi woke me up around nine. I crawled out of bed and opened the door to let him out. I was about to follow, but I realized that I should put clothes on before going out into the world. Lugosi paused at the top of the stairs, It ran through my mind that the dogs might be down there, but I would just be a second. I rushed back in, threw on some pants, and just as my foot hit the landing the screaming started. There was no growling or barks prefacing, just screams. I nearly slid down three flights of steps. When I got to the bottom Lugosi had already bolted past me back up. The neighbor was standing there holding his hand and bleeding. I turned and followed Lugosi back up. he was sitting on my bed whimpering covered in his own shit.
he had been bitten nine times and required surgery. If the neighbor hadn't have been right there he would be dead. Lugosi bit him as he was trying to pull open the jaws of his dogs mouth to get Lugosi out.
I could have prevented all of this if I just would have waited to open the door a few minutes while I put clothes on. I should have carried him down. I should have listened to Lee instead of assuming that she was overreacting. I shouldn’t have just assumed that everything would be ok even if the dogs were downstairs. I was lazy and a helpless creature that I was in care of paid the price. I kept thinking of him tossing his toy bear up in the air and wagging his tail on the way to the back door that morning, all excited for the day. I felt sick.
I called Avidd to cancel our plans, which at this point was the least of my worries, picked Lugosi up from the vet and went to Lee's house to take care of him and wallow in guilt.

That is so sad.
I love big dogs, but I don't like vicious dogs. Those pictures are so depressing.
he is getting better though, he should have the tubes out in the next couple of days. The neighbors are refusing to pay for the vet bill, so there is a lawsuit in the near future.
When Jason 7au heard about what happened from Avidd, he called to see how I was doing and if everything was ok. It was really sweet of him since we have never actually met....thanx dudez
that is why this game is so great.
I'm really glad he's on the mend. I can sympathize with the severe guilt. I once made a mistake that allowed one of my rabbits to attack the other one. (Though of course it is much less scarey for a person to think about facing an enraged bunny than an attack dog, rabbits can actually seriously hurt each other.)
How can they possibly refuse to pay for the bills?
That is totally absurd. Especially in CA, where they have truly draconian laws against dogs. (Sorry, I just think outlawing specific dogs serves absolutely no purpose. Owners are the problem. If you have a dog that can't be around other dogs it is your responsibility to contain them.) I'm surprised they aren't worried they are going to have to put their dogs down.
They were willing to pay a portion of the bill at first, but Lee insisted that it be everything. She also threatened animal control and eviction. They are being reactionary at this point.
their stance is that It was irresponsible for me to let Lugosi down alone and they were down there first, but as you say, if you have a killer dog you should go to great lengths to keep that dog away from anything that it might kill. they are right about my fuck up, but a shared yard is not a good idea for that animal.
I would be willing to pay 1/4th the cost, but they aren’t going to go for it at this point.
Lee works in a law firm and the consensus is that we will win easily. I was hoping to pay for some of it and avoid all the stress and fighting.
Sounds stressful. They should be glad it wasn't someone's toddler visiting. But I guess people are kind of defensive about their pets and can be in denial about the dangerousness.
That is so... horrible. I don't like dogs in general, very much. I was sent to the hospital at age 3 by one, and I haven't really gotten over it. Cats are much more my cup of tea. Rottweilers are the worst. They should not be kept as pets. They should be exterminated. I can't believe that the downstairs neighbors would be so... I don't even know what to say.. .
It's not your fault-- just bad luck. I'm terribly sorry you had to experience all of this and I sincerely hope it works out. This is truly a moving confession. =/
What ever happened with this?!??!
I read this chapter...
But did anything happen legally? Did they ever pay anything?!?!
thanks for asking, yo!
no they didn't we have 3 years to file in small claims...will happen in the summer.
I need to start dating a lawyer…
a really sexy lawyer…
Mmmm… business wear sex!!!
DUDE!!!, that sux, I totally can feel empathetic on this one, man thats a guilt trip like no other, lucky poor lugosi lived though, so it wasn't all terrible, plus you now have an even better reason to dislike your neighbors dogs.
