Animated.GIF: Phase 1 by Ohrlyeh Totenkinder

February 15th, 2007 12:44 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Create an animated gif or modify one that you find. See example below and examine these for inspiration.

I went for creepy on this one.

I think I succeeded. I had never made a .gif before so I did a little research and found a little program called gifbuilder. It was fairly intuitive and I figured it out right away. I liked the pictures I took but they didn’t flow together very well. I had to do alot of tweaking in Photoshop and add extra frames. All total it took several days considering this is the first task I started working on. It's still not as fluid as I would have liked, but for a first try I'm happy with it and the jerkiness adds to the creepy.

yeah, I’m gonna do that. I’ve been trying to figure out the best method. The images need to be someplace that they are seen one at a time in quick succession. The problem I’m facing is most of the ideas I have the stills will all be seen coming at an angle instead of flashed one at a time. I was thinking of creating light boxes and putting them along the concrete barriers on the highway, (but I don’t want to cause a bomb scare :P) the issue with that is that the entire loop of my gif is like 10 frames long. That is allot of light boxes. Maybe I'm making it harder than it needs to be…..more thought

you could loop the gif a couple times and glue it inside a muni tunnel

A place

On a road trip this past summer I thought about this task while driving through the salt flats between Salt Lake City and the wasteland of Nevada. It's such a straight shot. A lot of people had set up beer bottle sculptures and spelled out their names attached to various dirty messages and such. My friend and I then had a long conversation regarding the angles and math neccesary for a grand scale message to appear from far away to provide enough time for a car going 85 to read it. I can't think of a better place to complete this task.

Yeah, I’ve been there. It’s a testament to the immense boredom of living in the mid-west. The strange-mushroom/tree/boat-sculpture-for-no-reason always kinda creeps me out.

I hadn’t thought of the salt flats, but that is a perfect place. I’m stuck in Pueblo, CO right now and I was hoping to finish this one here tho. We shall see.
