Cool Memories by Caroline The Curly

INSTRUCTIONS: Examine how a contemporary historical event either did not happen or was our fantasy.

Now, several years ago, a fairly monumental event that changed the course of history forever, didn't happen. How can something that never happened have caused a war which caused the deaths of over 3800 Americans, and no one really knows how many others, but it may be over 650,000? you may be asking. Let me tell you.

On November 7, 2000, citizens of the US went to the polls to vote. Some did this before work, some on their lunch break, some on their way home, and some lucky souls probably didn't have work that day (Of course, there were probably some unlucky souls who also didn't have any work that day.) probably went any ole' time they felt like it. They went to their fire stations, to their schools, to their police stations, all sorts of places, and in each place, they told their name, showed some id, signed in, and took a ballot. They went up to the booth, and marked their choice of presidential canidate, among a slew of other issues. There were some places where there was a new meathod of voting, and it made it very hard to tell who you were voting for. In the evening, after work and voting, millions of Americans returned home, made dinner, ate, and watched the news. By around 7:30, they were all anxiously in their seats, as it seemed the only state who's votes were not yet accounted for, was florida, everyone else was accounted for by at least exit polls, and while some states were "too close to call" no combination that did not include florida would get either canidate above the 270 electoral votes needed to win. By 7:50, ten minutes before the polls closed in florida, the news stations were announcing that gore had won florida and the presidential election. But as the vote counts from counties in florida started to come in, the stations rescinded this announcement, as Bush was leading by a tiny tiny majority in florida. around 2 am, the stations announce that bush won, again, based on exit poll results, by nearly 60,000. Gore called bush to congratulate him, but didn't make a conscession speech til things in florida were more final(on his way to make the speech, bush's lead dwindled to under 1000). An hour later, the stations took back their declaration of bush's victory. Gore called bush and took back his congratulations. The vote was so close (under 1000 lead for bush) that a recount was nessicary. The votes were recounted by machine, but as the law allowed, gore asked for a manuel recount in several counties. a week later, those manual recounts were still happening. 11 days after the election, the Florida secretary of state declared Florida for Bush.

However, Bush had not won the presidential election. Due to a stupid system of voting put in place by the racist, classist, sexist men who founded our country, Bush was declared the winner of the presidential election. Bush may have won the electoral vote by 5 electoral votes, but 539,943, over half a million more people voted for Gore than for Bush. So truely, Bush was never elected President, and the Iraq war never really happened, because Bush is not the real president, so he doens't really have the power to send the troops anywhere, so the travesty of thousands of people dieing happened because of something that never happened.

You know, Bush *doesn't* have the power to declare war.

Just sayin'.
