Document A Construction by Oliver X

INSTRUCTIONS: Document A Construction

One geometrical construction that has been sought since ancient times is a method of trisecting an angle.

This turns out to be impossible to do with compass and straight-edge but can be done quite simply with just paper.

First, our piece of paper

Then, an arbitrary angle, say about 70 degrees

c3.jpg

Fold two evenly-space parallel lines at the bottom

c4.jpg

Fold the bottom corner so it meets the lower line, while simultaneously folding the edge corner of the upper line to meet our angle

c5.jpg

The folded portion of the lower line is now one our trisecting rays

Making the second one left as an exercise to the reader.

You, sir, have quadrisected this angle. In a trisection construction, one must produce only three angles.
