Note To Players by Orion

September 21st, 2006 11:54 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Compose a statement that you feel should be shared with all SFZero players.

Your statement should be useful, enlightening, or, at the very least, novel and funny.

I hate to leave such a self-serving proof (and I had all sorts of high-falootin' hopes for this particular one), but lately I've felt a bit self-conscious and I really want to get this out. See, some of you might have noticed that I leave a lot of comments on people's tasks, often as part of a sort of "comment spree." I'd love to think that people appreciate these comments and that they're a nice way to welcome new players to the game. I also think they're a great way of "soft voting" for a task.

Comment!

I know I really feel great when someone leaves a nice comment on one of my tasks...and I know that I don't usually take it too badly when someone leaves constructive feedback. The thing is, I think far too many comments are of the "constructive feedback" variety, a large number are rather airy, and very few are meant to spur any sort of conversation. So, what would I like to see? More thoughtful comments, from everyone! More discussion ON sf0! More feedback, more dialogue, more everything. I realize that message boards exist (somewhere) but not everyone can see those...let's bring some discussion to the site and make some noise.

I'm leaving a note on my own "leave a note!" task to say that I fully realize my own "Hahaha!" note pictured above is hardly a point of discussion. But, sometimes, that's all it takes!

I agree. Therefore I am posting my agreeance as a comment.

I know I get a little self concious when a task of mine goes unnoticed, but selfishly, I don't comment on other peoples tasks as much as I should.

So, I'll try to practice what you preach.

The message board, as limited and as exclusve as it was, seems to be dead. Honestly, I see very little need for them to continue; as long as people make use of the "Write About This" button.

Right on. Get everyone actually discussing the tasks, and your game takes on even more effect on people's lives and psychologies.

you're really asking for fake/sincear snark with this one.

Jenny Hayes: Indeed. I was trying really hard but just wasn't witty enough to come some good snarky "constructive feedback".

I notice a lot of "constructive feedback", on new players' tasks, and this is because...well...the completions suck. This hasn't been happening as much lately, but I think in general its better not to say anything, in spite of suckage. It can be discouraging, and they're either going to do better tasks or quit playing, because mindlessly accruing points is not very rewarding.

I think just about everyone's first comple of completions look a little lackluster when they're starting out.

Hell, some of my early ones are downright embarissing.

I'm not so certain the "constructive feedback" is very helpful at that early stage. It can seem exclusianry or overly agressive to people who just start out. I feel like people who continue past that stage get the hang of it eventually, and almost always start producing amazing stuff.

I don't mean to say "constructive feedback" can't be...well...constructive, but it is often best left alone for brand new players or delivered as a PRIVATE message. Really, though, my point isn't that we need less criticism...it's that we need MORE everything. More laughs, more questions, more answers, and (for Jenny Hayes) more ROTFL's. Just, uh, you know...spelled out and everything.

Yeah, I didn't mean to dwell on criticism. I just thought it was a comment that might provoke discussion.

personally i thought message boards seem like a good idea. i'm nothing more than a n00b but i don't know what the best way to go about meeting new players is. I would instinctively go looking for boards. I also think it might be a nice place to discuss wild out there topic and just general things and put together gatherings or whatever else.

So i guess this message truly IS meant for me. because at least now i know how to say hello properly to other players.

HELLO, OTHER PLAYER!

Hello Maxx!

There was (is?) a message board operated by folks outside of SF0, but not everyone had access...

I know Libatious Raven, formerly Drinky Crow, runs a messges board thats truly open, but it was hacked by Turkish Hackers (seriously) and was forced to reboot:

And here 'tis

Hurray for new players!

Orion, you are right about it, one thing that really got me into the game was when random people stated comenting on my tasks. and I had almost dropped out before that.

with this in mind: TO THE COMMENTO-SPHERE!

I'm glad to see some new activity (and some new blood). I'm all for getting that message board going...but I'm still rallying behind the comments as well. :)

What's so unbelievable about Turkish hackers? Don't make me grab my scimitar and ride my war pony over there and make you part of my empire!

Can't help it...

That's funny, Bug...
