Journey to the End of the Night: Glasnost by PopsBlair, Matre K

June 29th, 2007 2:36 PM

INSTRUCTIONS:

The city spreads out before you. Rushing from point to point, lit by the slow strobe of fluorescent buses and dark streets. Stumbling into situations for a stranger's signature. Fleeing unknown pursuers, breathing hard, admiring the landscape and the multitude of worlds hidden in it.

For one night, drop your relations, your work and leisure activities, and all your usual motives for movement and action, and let yourself be drawn by the attractions of the chase and the encounters you find there.

If you participated in Journey in any way (as a player, chaser, or volunteer), please post your proof here. The more detail you get into, the more thorough you are, the better. If you have photographs, please post them! If you don't, make a comic like Rob (our winner this year and third place last year) did. Describe your chases, the people you met, what you thought of the checkpoints, etc.

We will be posting the results later this week, once there are some completions up.

Love,
The SFZero Daemon

Matre K and I (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) were volunteers at the first checkpoint, at Coit Tower. Not surprisingly, it was windy and chilly and there was no parking in the lot, but we managed to offload our important site equipment specifically designed for the runner's rejuvenation and refreshment. Matre K dragged everything up the stairs while I parked, a fair trade-off. We received top-secret wireless transmissions concerning instructions for the runners utilizing state-of- the-art cellular® telephone technology. I also received a cellular transmission from a random runner asking me questions for which I had no answer. Tension built. The city was beautiful in the gathering twilight. Finally. Rob was the first to appear, sweaty and breathing hard after the run up the stairs. It was fully ten minutes before anyone else showed up, which is doubly amazing since apparently Rob had been chased through Embarcadero One before resuming the race. Smaller groups began arriving in discreet and manageable intervals, until we were suddenly hit by a massive number of enthusiastic runners and chasers. What followed was a chaotic fire-drill to refill coke and water cups, sign manifests, make sure everyone got instructions for the next checkpoint, and take pictures of all the participants. I'm sure I missed some of you, but the intent was there. It was fun seeing some familiar faces, as well as some new ones: Kudos to Edward...a 'walk-on' in his first sfzero task! As always, Matre K and I enjoyed being pulled out of our mundane existence to experience the excitement of the race from the relative comfort of our folding chairs. Congratulations to all, including the sf0 guys who made it all possible.

Thank you so much for the water/coke! The directions for the event totally said something like "BRING WATER" or something else equally forceful and terrifying, but my partner didn't, anyway, so it was super thoughtful and considerate!
