The Good Ship Yummy

A few weeks ago I decided to attempt to create an epic present for one of the friends I met my first year of university.

Unfortunately, I had not bought my replacement camera yet (my old one was taken when i forgot it in the common room for a few hours) so I only have these two pictures of it, using my cellphone.

First, I went to the local specialist candy store named 'candy mountain'. There I bought:

~ a big bag in bulk of candy blox, which are basically legos in candy form
~ Two 'ooze tubez', which are like a toothpaste tube full of syrupy sticky liquid candy, to use as mortar
~ Strawberry milkshake gummies to use as cannons
~ A single watermelon gummy ring for the steering wheel
~ Swedish Fish for the water
~ Sour Patch 'pirates'
~ Kool-aid for the deck (I attatched these to cardboard)
~ Alphabet Pasta (Uncooked, I spelled out "The Good Ship Yummy" with it and Ooze on the base)
~ Various random candies which were yellow; including banana, pear and buttered popcorn flavoured jelly bellys, rockets, and werthers candies for the treasure.

I built the first layer of blox first, creating the shape of the ship. I built these up as walls, leaing holes for the cannons to sit in, and small platforms for the cannons behind them.

Next, I cut a piece of cardboard the appropriate size for the deck, attaching it using tabs. I oozed on kool-aid packets on top, to support the items on top of the deck. I also built support pillars under it once i realized it would cave under the weight.

Next, i built a mast, and smaller pillars on the fron corners of the ship, and created rigging using embroidery floss. I coloured in a post-it note with the skull and crossbones to resemble a flag.

After, I built a square enclosure (the treasure box on the rear of the deck) for the treasure itself, and filled it. Keep in mind there was lots of ooze placed on all of this, and lots of fixing, especially in the mast's case.

Finally, i installed the wheel (supported by two blocks) and the sour patch pirates, and the fish and alphabet pasta labelling - which you can kind of see to the front of the ship in the pictures. All in all, one dumptruck load of fun for me, and a pleasant suprise for my friend amber. woot!
