Object Annotation by Le Renard Rouge

March 15th, 2008 11:34 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Pick a local public object that you enjoy and leave a note on it describing your feelings in great detail.

Several local objects popped into my head when I first looked at this task, and they were either a.) too symbolic and easy or b.) completely meaningless. Thus I started thinking outside the box, about things that aren't widely regarded as symbols of the city or really of anything in particular. Thats when I remembered the gate that me and my close friends walk through every day, whether its to get to class, get something to eat, or go to a party. Plentiful smiles, jokes and the like have been shared under and around Murfin Gate, and it would be an utter shame should this passageway continue to be unappreciated for its significance and the joy it brings to me every single day I walk through it.

During the 3 minutes it took me to put up the note, about 12 people walked through Murfin Gate, and 10 of them stopped and read it. It was very noticable and I hope that many people pass through and read about how I truly feel about this especially wonderful portal.

Heres to you, Murfin Gate, for being the symbol of our brotherhood and the essence of what comradeship and its ensuing emotional pleasures can be. You are remembered.

Pathway

Pathway

This is where me and my comrades walk every day, smiling, joking, and enjoying life, right through those iron gates.

Before II

Before II

This is Murfin Gate from the rear, and those guys are all wearing green because it's St. Patrick's Day. That means a whole lot of people will be seeing my note today, because more will be coming and going than usual.

This is the plaque next to Murfin Gate with the dedication on it.

It took me a while to arrive at a satisfactory way to tell Murfin Gate how I felt, and these are my failed attempts at doing so.

My note

My note

This is what I ultimately felt was the best expression of how I felt about Murfin Gate. It is currently resting at the top of the arch in plain view.

Swaying in the breeze

Swaying in the breeze

I climbed up and put my note where I wanted it, only to realize that the wind made it flip up and become unreadable. I climbed up again and secured the bottom so it would be decipherable to the masses.

What is that?

What is that?

Here are some of the 10 or so people I saw stop and read the note during the few minutes I was outside putting it up.

Done... almost...

Done... almost...

Me regarding my creation.

DONE!

DONE!

36 hours later, I moved the note down and to the right slightly due to readability issues. I also secured it with more tape. May many people see it and realize Murfin Gate's true worth.

May I just take a moment of your time to tell you how much I respect you for these priceless words for a priceless structure. I myself have had the honor of walking underneath that steadfast representation of unwavering human connection and looking back at those few seconds brings tears to my eyes. Bravo kind sir, bravo.
