Work is So Strange by sfosegine errorelli

July 20th, 2006 3:53 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Describe in some detail the strangest thing that happened to you at work in the past week. If you don't work, describe the strangest thing that happened to you during a leisure activity.

I was on the bus to a job interview at a floral shop in Ukrainian Village, which put me somewhere between leisure and work, and filled me with anxiety in a productive sort of way (this was two days ago. I got the job). A heavily tattooed man and his four year old son were occupying the seats ahead of me, and I was looking out the window. In my peripheral vision, I saw a small hand waving, so I turned and waved back at the son. He then began to point at his bicep, where he had a partially faded temporary tattoo of a tiger. I smiled and told him it was cool. He said something in a high-pitched voice that sounded like "beep beep beep". "What?" I asked him. "Have you got one?" he asked me. "Nope" I said. Then the boy grabbed his father's arm and began pointing out the individual tattoos to me. His father didn't seem to mind until the boy pulled down the front of his (the father's) tank top and tried to wrench around his torso to show me the tattoo of a naked woman covered in tattoos on his dad's chest. "She sees 'em, son", he said, patting the child on his head, but the kid didn't seem satisfied, and kept scanning my face for a reaction. For the rest of the bus ride.
