Document Decay by Ima Polecat

July 8th, 2007 8:38 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Document an instance of decay.

This is an abandoned house I photographed earlier this month in upstate New York. The player piano pictured was on the first floor. The couch lying on the floor was used to keep the front door shut. Upstairs was a much older, "square" piano. I looked up the makers-- it was made sometime between 1836 and 1864. When my mom lifted up the back to look at the strings, I discovered a dead rat inside. It was so old the whole body was mummified and white. I have also included photos of one of the back rooms with peeling wallpaper that has created a really beautiful effect.

The second set of photos was from a second abandoned house. I was just beginning to find a way inside when we were run off by a local.

This task was particularly pleasing to me, as I have a long-term obsession with photographing decay. I find it intensely beautiful.
