Counting by Stone Saints

July 1st, 2006 4:11 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Count or measure something that has never been counted or measured before. How many CDs can you label with one sharpie? How long does it take for all the ketchup to run out of the bottle? How many times does a trafic light change in an hour? How many licks does it taket to get to the center of a tootsie pop?

What do you wonder about? Find out and let us know.

A few months ago, I bought a box of 500 cotton swabs (off-brand Q-tips). I decided to count how many have been used. To do so, I had to count how many remained.

348 remained, so 152 have been used.

Yeah... but how confident are you that there were exactly 500 to start with? I applaud your counting, but I'm skeptical about the results.

Hmmm... I see what you mean. You never know how many swabs those sneaky off-brand Q-tip people REALLY put in their boxes.

Exactly!

It reminds me of my college days. I was just squeeking by so I used to count the number of everything that was supposed to come in a package and if I didn't get what I paid for, I'd write a letter to the company. I remember complaining about my package of pizza rolls having only 10 pieces when it was supposed to have 11-14. The company sent me coupons for 5 free packs! Heh!
