INSTRUCTIONS: Write a series of pieces that deal (in any way: thematically, in location, character, etc.) with San Francisco. The writing can consist of poems, scenes, plays, short stories, reportage, diary/journal entries, historical, political, or economic analyses, even a full novel - or anything you desire. Link the writings together in some way, perhaps thematically or through a single character.

Illustrate your writing with select drawings, photographs, charts, or other images that you create.

Collaborate if you will, but if you work with others, you must all contribute to both the writing and imagery.

For this task, I decided to go journal-entry style. The journal is written and illustrated by a character named Lou who is the companion of fortune hunter called Byron. Byron has come to San Francisco looking for gold--unfortunately, he's a bit late on the Gold Rush scene. Neither Byron nor Lou are very bright--but Byron is determined to follow his dream of becoming rich, and Lou gets a nice tour of San Francisco as he follows Byron on his luckless quest.

Here's what the entries say:

July 5, 2006

We're nearly there. After seeing fireworks over the water last night, we went to sleep. Today we started early. Winding roads led us through the mountains to a huge red bridge, which I'm told is called the Golden Gate. Byron says the name is a good sign--that it will lead us to our fortune.

*The Bridge to Byron's Fortune!*

July 6, 2006

We're in the city now. Byron says he can almost smell our fortune! I wonder what it will be like to be rich? There are thousands of others in the city as well--have they all come to look for gold, too? Byron took us to a place called the Palace of Fine Arts. He figured that a King & Queen would be living @ the Palace--and that the very rich would know where to find gold. But the Palace wasn't what Byron expected...

*Byron disappointed--But I thought the rooms in the place called the Exploratorium were worth the visit.*

July 7, 2006

Byron learned from a man on the street that we can find a shortcut to China in San Francisco! When I was young, I heard that if you dig deep enough, you can dig a hole to China. Someone in San Francisco has already done that! We went down into this hole, in which there is a train called the BART. We took it to the other side of the hole and, indeed, we came out on the other side to find China!

*This was in Byron's fortune cookie: "A lucky day is in your future."*

July 8, 2006

Byron didn't find any gold in China. But he did hear of a place called Alcatraz. It's a prison! Byron says that if he can't find a king, a criminal's the next best person to ask where to find gold. Getting into the prison was easier than expected--there's a boat that takes you right to it! But Byron was disappointed yet again--it turns out they don't keep prisoners in Alcatraz anymore. I, on the other hand, was relieved!

*One of Byron's heroes stayed here--Al Capone!*

July 9, 2006

Today Byron happened to go into a book shop. He bought a book called "The Quick-Glance History of San Francisco." Here, he learned that we've missed the gold rush by about 150 years! So Byron has decided to leave the city. He hears that Mexico, which isn't too far from here, is a better place to look for gold. On our last day, Byron let me pick where to go. I decided to take us to the beach. We saw seals! I enjoyed this city--and look forward to our trip to Mexico.
