Small Changes Make A Big Difference by Stone Saints

August 7th, 2006 8:09 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Take an artwork that you did not make and alter it in a subtle way so that the meaning of the piece is changed in a significant way.

Show us the differences and your intended consequences.

For this task, I removed Saint Anthony from Hieronymus Bosch's "The Temptation of Saint Anthony," making it, simply, "The Temptation." Bosch's work fascinates me for many reasons, not least of which is that he paints many grotesque images of man's darker side, but gets away with it (in the 15th and 16th centuries, no less) by adding a religious element. I decided to remove the central religious element in this picture (St. Anthony), leaving the viewer with simply the grotesque and tempting--and leaving Bosch with what it seems he liked best to paint...

On a side note, Bosch's work sometimes remind me of 'Where's Waldo?' So perhaps you can have a bit of fun playing 'Where's Anthony?'

I really like Bosch, and I really like this.

Where did you get the figure that replaced St. Anthony?

Thanks--I actually didn't replace St. Anthony, I just photoshopped him out and gave the girl behind him a bigger dress and an extra hand.

I was wondering about that. I didn't even notice the hand. I suppose extra appendages aren't really that out of place in a Bosch painting.

Well, it's not really an extra hand. Only one of her hands was in the original, so I just gave her the second hand as well.
